Job description

The Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation has the primary accountability for the maintenance and repair of the electrical and automation aspect of Seaspan Ferries in service vessels including the LNG / Hybrid-electric vessels. Daily work of the Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation will involve responding to and diagnosing engineering problems on board vessels, providing, and implementing repair recommendations, managing / overseeing the planned maintenance program for electrical work, coordinating, and initiating work orders for vessel refits, and providing guidance and mentorship for the shipboard engineers.

Note : Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 7700 Hopcott Road, Delta.

What you'll do

  • Responds to electrical issues reported by the vessel crew or the on-board engineer, identifies the accuracy of the report, and assesses if repairs can be conducted while the vessel is in service.
  • If the nature of the repair requires the vessel to be removed from service, establishes the estimated downtime from internal and external sources, and collaborates a workable schedule with the customer service department.
  • Provides a scope of work (or work order) detailing all the repair work that needs to happen in scheduled out-of-service / dry dock periods.
  • If purchasing of new equipment is required, sources options and obtains quotes, then initiates a purchase order for the item. Coordinates approvals and follows up with Purchasing to ensure an efficient delivery schedule.
  • Supervises the electrical repair work to ensure that work is completed in a timely and quality manner.
  • Assists other Port Engineers with mechanical repairs / faults as required.
  • Manages and contributes to the development of planned maintenance system / software.
  • Coordinates and prepares work scope for electrical vessels prior to out-of-service and docking periods.
  • Provide training on electrical / automation systems for Vessel crew.
  • Works with Marine personnel and Engineering Superintendent on the advancement (mentoring, training, assessment) of junior engineers.

What you'll bring

  • Experience as a shipboard Electro Technical Officer or Industrial Electrician with sufficient training and experience, shall also be considered
  • 4+ years' experience with troubleshooting and repairing industrial electro-mechanical components and equipment.
  • Knowledge of vessels and vessel propulsion systems including generator and motor maintenance and repair.
  • Must be willing to assist other team members with mechanical repairs.
  • Exceptional communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to dissect a problem and form solutions that meet real-time constraints.
  • Proven ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical failures.
  • Capability of modifying and / or changing mechanical parts as required.
  • Great teammate with a positive mindset and ability to adapt / work independently in a challenging environment.
  • Resourceful; eager to learn from others.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Possess mechanical experience in assembling and disassembling components.
  • Experience with AC / DC switchboards, grid converters, and propulsion inverters are an asset.

The estimated salary for this position is $104,700 - $125,600. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
