Job summary

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years of hands-on crop breeding experience with quantitative genetics.
  • Proficiency in experimental design and statistical analysis using SAS or R.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Plant Breeder to join their research and development team in the Kimberley area. This critical role focuses on developing new, improved field crop varieties with enhanced yield, disease resistance, and adaptation to challenging environmental conditions prevalent in the region. You will lead breeding programs from initial crossing to final variety release, utilizing cutting-edge genetic and genomic tools. This is a significant opportunity for a dedicated plant scientist to contribute to agricultural advancement in the Northern Cape .

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and execute plant breeding programs for key field crops, focusing on traits such as yield, stress tolerance, and quality.
  • Conduct field trials, collect phenotypic data, and perform statistical analysis for selection and evaluation.
  • Utilize molecular markers and genomic tools to accelerate breeding efforts and enhance selection accuracy.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage research projects and lead breeding efforts in the agricultural context of the Northern Cape.
