Job summary

City of Kelowna is seeking a Pipelayer I to install, repair, and maintain water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage pipe systems in Kelowna, BC. You will interpret blueprints and plans, use lasers and transit levels to verify grades, and respond to emergency callouts for pipe bursts.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • EOCP Wastewater Collection Level I certification.
  • EOCP Water Distribution Level I certification.
  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence (Class 5).
  • Experience in pipelaying or utility construction.
  • Willing to complete EOCP certifications if not held.
  • Strong problem-solving in field conditions.
  • Flexible to adapt to changing work conditions and emergencies.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain water, sewer, and storm drainage pipe systems.
  • Install or repair pipelines and structures per design; respond to pipe-burst emergencies.
  • Interpret blueprints and plans using lasers and transit levels to verify grades.
  • Perform hand-shoveling to uncover buried utilities as needed.
  • Operate and maintain rollers, tampers, trucks, and hand/power tools.
  • Select, prepare, align, connect, and seal pipe joints with proper materials.
  • Ensure work follows quality standards, safety rules, and regulations.
  • Perform manual labour in confined spaces and deep trenches.

  • The candidate will install, repair, and maintain water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage pipe systems.
  • The candidate will be responsible for installing or repairing pipe systems and associated structures as per technical design specifications and responding to emergency callouts when required for pipe bursts.
  • The candidate will be responsible for interpreting blueprints, construction drawings, maps, plans, survey cut sheets and grade stakes and using instruments such as lasers and transit levels to verify proper grades and alignment of trenches/excavations.
  • The candidate will be required to perform hand-shoveling to uncover buried utilities as needed.
  • The candidate must operate and maintain work-related equipment such as rollers, tampers, trucks and various hand and power tools.
  • The candidate must select, prepare, align, connect and seal pipe joints using appropriate techniques and materials.
  • The candidate must ensure that work is carried out in compliance with quality standards, safe work practice, and applicable regulations.
  • The candidate will be responsible for manual labour duties and working in confined spaces and deep trenches.
Job Requirements
  • The candidate must have completed high school education or equivalent.
  • The candidate must hold EOCP Wastewater Collection Level I certification.
  • The candidate must hold EOCP Water Distribution Level I certification.
  • The candidate must possess a valid BC Driver’s Licence (Class 5).
  • The candidate must have relevant experience in pipelaying or utility construction work.
  • Candidates without certifications may be considered if willing to complete funded training programs for EOCP certifications.
  • The candidate must demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities in field conditions.
  • The candidate must be flexible to adapt to changing work conditions and emergency situations.
  • The candidate must be able to work effectively as part of a team.
