The Piano Teacher is required to work Saturdays 11am-4pm.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Music School, the Piano Teacher is responsible for providing music education to children and youth primarily from the Regent Park, Moss Park, and South Cabbagetown communities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide an enjoyable and educational experience of music for every student.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust teaching methods and materials when necessary.
  • Encourage and guide students to prepare adequately for RCM exams.
  • Attend all scheduled lessons, classes, and rehearsals punctually (i.e., arrive before students).
  • Notify the Music School Director/Manager of any student's learning challenges, physical conditions, or other issues related to violence, illicit drug use, crime, or other factors in their environment, as well as attendance problems.
  • Consult with parents regularly.
  • Prepare students for competitions, public events, RCM exams, and recitals.
  • Encourage students to utilize the school's resources such as other lessons, camps, and concert tickets.
  • Adhere to all agency guidelines and policies; attend staff meetings and workshops when possible.
  • Maintain weekly attendance records.
  • Request necessary teaching materials.
  • Notify the Music School Director/Manager of teaching absences in advance.
  • Communicate with parents and keep them updated on student progress.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Prior experience teaching the piano.
  • Post-secondary education in music.
  • Musical and teaching ability.
  • Knowledge of and experience applying principles of teaching children and youth (considered an asset).
  • Ability to engage, communicate, work with, and maintain relationships with diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Ability to teach various styles of music and approaches.
  • Commitment to professional conduct and ethics.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Strong English communication skills; additional languages relevant to the communities served are assets.
  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Ability to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a satisfactory result.
  • Up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination approved for use in Canada.
