Job description

Position Summary

The Piano Teacher is required to work Mondays from 4pm to 8pm. Reporting to the Manager of the Music School, the teacher is responsible for providing music education to children and youth primarily from the Regent Park, Moss Park, and South Cabbagetown communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide an enjoyable and educational music experience for each student.
  2. Monitor student progress and adapt teaching methods and materials as needed.
  3. Encourage and prepare students for RCM exams.
  4. Attend scheduled lessons, classes, and rehearsals punctually.
  5. Report any learning challenges, physical conditions, or issues related to violence, drug use, or other concerns in students' home or neighborhood environments to the Music School Director/Manager.
  6. Regularly consult with parents regarding student progress.
  7. Prepare students for competitions, public events, RCM exams, and recitals.
  8. Encourage students to utilize the school's resources such as additional lessons, camps, and concert tickets.
  9. Follow all agency guidelines and policies; participate in staff meetings and workshops.
  10. Maintain weekly attendance records.
  11. Request necessary teaching materials and notify the manager of absences in advance.
  12. Communicate with parents about student progress.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Experience teaching piano.
  2. Post-secondary education in music.
  3. Strong musical and teaching abilities.
  4. Knowledge of and experience with teaching children and youth is an asset.
  5. Ability to engage and communicate effectively with diverse communities.
  6. Competence in teaching various music styles and approaches.
  7. Commitment to professional conduct and ethics.
  8. Basic computer skills.
  9. Excellent written and verbal English communication skills; additional languages relevant to the community are an asset.
  10. Legal authorization to work in Canada.
  11. Ability to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a satisfactory result.
  12. Up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination approved in Canada.
