Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA-approved school.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training completed in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification, or
  • one year of post‑medical school training (first year of residency or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice, or
  • non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.
• Board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and/or eligibility to be certified in both Pulmonary and Critical Care.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical requirements: meet position standards, pass a physical exam prior to placement, subject to random drug testing, and able to lift 15–44 pounds, push, reach above shoulder, use fingers and both hands, walk or stand for 3–5 hours, kneel, coordinate rapid mental and muscular movements, have depth perception, and distinguish basic colors and shades. A hearing aid is permitted.
• Experience in the Intensive Care Unit and procedural capabilities such as bronchoscopy, interpretation of pulmonary function testing.
• Experience with research is desired.

Duties

• Evaluation and treatment of patients with complex pulmonary issues.
• Interpretation of pulmonary function and 6‑minute walk testing.
• Bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, and insertion of indwelling pleural catheters.
• Pulmonary consultation and supervision of Respiratory Therapists.
• Documentation in CPRS and participation in process improvement and quality assurance projects.
• Committee participation and other medical staff activities.
• Academic responsibilities, if applicable, including affiliation with UCD, maintenance of academic standing, and scholarly activities.
• Availability for inpatient combined ICU Pulmonary Service Team duties.
• Independent care delivery for chronic, acute, or same‑day medical needs for veteran patients, addressing conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, COPD, mental health disorders, and more.
• Writing orders for diagnostic testing, prescribing medications, consulting with other services/sections, and utilizing electronic medical records.
• Health risk assessment, goal setting for prevention, and chronic disease management.
• Focus on preventive medicine and coordination of care to improve patient outcomes.
• Document all medical information in an electronic medical record and perform medication reconciliation.
• Instructional and educational support for Residents and Fellows.
• Open continuous announcement remaining available until July 20, 2026; initial cutoff date for referral is May 27, 2026, with subsequent cutoffs every 2 weeks.

• Compensation: competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases; 50–55 days paid time off per year (including annual leave, sick leave, paid federal holidays, and CME days); traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting); federal 401(k) with up to 5% contributions by VA; full federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care insurance (many programs can be carried into retirement); contract: no physician employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
• Provider is a critical care/pulmonary or internal medicine physician with significant critical care/pulmonary experience; must be certified by ABIM and/or eligible for certification in both subspecialties.
• Expected to document into CPRS promptly and participate in medical staff activities, including committee work.
• Direct supervisor is Chief of Critical Care and Pulmonary Section.
• Provider will serve both clinical and administrative critical care/pulmonary services at VANCHCS.
• Eligible for a sign‑on bonus authorized under the EDRP; former EDRP participants are ineligible for this incentive.
