Job Summary:

The Personal Support Worker provides personal support services to clients and families within the framework of VON policies, procedures, and standards. The PSW collaborates with members of the healthcare team to meet clients' needs and promote independence and well-being.

This position is eligible for a $3.00 per hour wage enhancement from the Ontario Government for all hours spent directly caring for clients.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Observe and evaluate clients' or families' home and personal situations, and care plans, recommending changes as necessary.
  2. Contribute to developing and implementing personal support care plans under the guidance of the Program Manager.
  3. Perform personal support tasks such as light cleaning, meal preparation, clothing care, shopping, and household safety monitoring.
  4. Provide personal care as directed, including assistance with mobility, hygiene, and daily activities.
  5. Offer bedside care under nurse supervision when required.
  6. Provide respite care and support to clients' families, including child care as needed.
  7. Organize daily activities and prioritize support tasks under supervision.
  8. Complete daily call checks and other documentation to ensure service efficiency.
  9. Assess communication patterns and ability to relate of clients.
  10. Communicate with the healthcare team regarding client needs and report changes or concerns.
  11. Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety legislation and VON policies to ensure safety.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.
External and Internal Relationships:

Frequent engagement with supervisors and program managers regarding client plans and relevant information.

Education, Designations, and Experience:
  • High school diploma; secondary education preferred.
  • CCA Certification in Nova Scotia or equivalent.
  • Certificate in Home Support Worker (Level I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program, or Healthcare Aide.
  • Current First Aid or CPR Level C certificate, if applicable.
  • Experience with household management, elderly, ill individuals, or children.
Skill Requirements:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective communication demonstrating respect, empathy, and understanding.
  • Good assessment skills and awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to follow directions and adapt to various social and economic environments.
  • Adherence to confidentiality standards.
Other Requirements:
  • Access to a personal vehicle, valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance.
  • Criminal Records Check, Vulnerable Sector Search, and Child Abuse Registry Check as required.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours.
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required.
