Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Shifts: Days/Evening/Weekends/Stat Holidays 0700-1500, 1500-2300, 8-hour shifts

The Krembil Brain Institute at Toronto Western Hospital is home to one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive multidisciplinary teams working to prevent and confront problems of the brain and spine. One in three Canadians will experience a brain-related condition such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Epilepsy, Stroke or Concussion, in their lifetime.

The Neurovascular Unit (NVU) within the Krembil Brain Institute (KBI) program is the first of its kind in Canada. It offers 44 inpatient beds, including 20 High Acuity Level II beds for patients requiring specialized interventions and monitoring. The NVU was designated as the District Stroke Centre for the West Toronto Region and achieved stroke distinction from Accreditation Canada in 2017 for clinical excellence and continuous improvement in neurovascular patient care.

Position Summary

The Personal Support Worker (PSW) is a member of the inter-professional care team, collaborating actively with team members to provide patient care.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living such as feeding, lifts and transfers, bathing, skin care, oral hygiene, and toileting.
• Perform tasks delegated by an RN or RPN, in compliance with RHPA, with appropriate training. RNs and RPNs oversee PSW tasks, which may include procedures involving insertion of instruments into body cavities or care under the dermis.
• Communicate and demonstrate basic information according to patient’s pre-established Plan of Care.
• Ensure a safe environment by reporting unsafe conditions, equipment issues, and patient behavioral, physical, or cognitive changes to RNs, RPNs, or other regulated health providers, in accordance with hospital policies.

Qualifications

• Current registration with the Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority (HSCPOA)
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certificate
• Behavioral management training (e.g., PIECES, U-First, CPI) is an asset
• Ability to handle daily physical exertion (standing, walking, climbing, reaching, frequent movement)
• Experience in acute care and/or rehabilitation is an asset
• Good attendance record required
