The role covers daily help, mobility support with walker or wheelchair, meal preparation, and light housekeeping to maintain quality of life and independence. We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 55-year-old woman living with myotonic dystrophy in Keswick, Ontario. She lives with her husband who provides primary support, but they need additional help with daily tasks to maintain quality of life and independence. She uses a walker and wheelchair for mobility and has limited appetite due to reduced activity levels. This is her first time receiving professional care support.
The caregiver will provide essential daily support including mobility assistance (helping her stand, transfer, and navigate to the washroom), light housekeeping (tidying the bathroom and kitchen - they have a separate cleaning service for deep cleaning), meal preparation for lunch and dinner, and ensuring she has access to snacks throughout the day. The role focuses on maintaining a clean, hygienic living environment and supporting nutritional needs with basic, simple meals. As the relationship develops, there may be opportunities to encourage outdoor activities like wheelchair walks, though this isn't currently expected.
We need a PSW who makes the client feel comfortable and respected, demonstrates calm and patient demeanor, brings positive energy to each visit, and honors her independence. The ideal caregiver has experience with mobility assistance using walkers and wheelchairs, understands myotonic dystrophy or similar neuromuscular conditions, can prepare nutritious meals, and speaks English fluently. Reliability and consistency are essential, as is the ability to take initiative while respecting the client's preferences and boundaries.
This is a daily position requiring 3 hours per day, 3days per week (Tues/Wed/Fri, 1pm-4pm). The family is looking for consistent, ongoing support with the same caregiver to build trust and familiarity. Visits should occur during daytime hours to assist with meals and daily activities. The position is expected to start as soon as a suitable match is found, with flexibility during the initial trial period to ensure compatibility.
