The Personal Banking Officer is the lead role involved in outbound, banker-initiated contact of members using in-branch renewal lists, branch, and marketing lead lists. The focus of this role is to contact and meet with designated members to understand and meet their overall banking needs, consolidate share of wallet, and refer to more senior bankers. Sales are driven by appointments generated from proactive calling and upselling referrals provided by other sales professionals.
Contributes to meeting team sales plans and related activities through effective assessment of member financial needs. Provides product and service solutions (medium to high complexity in credit and investment) through effective interviewing and probing, delivering financial advice to satisfy the member’s total financial needs. Recognizes and acts on referrals and sales opportunities and maintains relationships with business partners to optimize business opportunities and referrals.
Major Responsibilities
- Contribute to the growth and ongoing maintenance of the business and community portfolio.
- Source, receive, investigate, and analyze requests for products from various sources, including individual and commercial accounts, non-member/client entities, associations, co-operatives, not-for-profit organizations, and competitors.
- Manage Alterna’s business relationships, including commercial accounts, co-operatives, and not-for-profit organizations.
- Meet sales targets by delivering products and services that prioritize the member’s needs.
- Proactively promote, sell, and deliver a full range of banking products and services to meet members’ needs.
- Participate actively in branch meetings, huddles, initiatives, and campaigns, following the sales and service model.
- Maximize sales opportunities using effective sales interviewing skills to uncover long-term financial needs.
- Provide financial advice to members with moderate investment/credit needs using financial calculators.
- Acquire and refer potential high-value member relationships to internal and external partners.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all products and services, including procedural changes.
- Understand and apply risk-based pricing models and use rational pricing discretion to ensure profitability.
- Use sales and service tools to support member interactions.
- Develop and implement a proactive member call plan.
- Follow through on self-generated sales and retention leads, as well as referrals from staff.
- Identify personal development opportunities and complete related activities.
- Participate in regular coaching sessions.
- Comply with anti-money laundering guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Identify and note exceptions to policy and procedures when recommending credit approval.
Qualifications
Education / Certification / Experience
- Post-secondary education plus 3 years of related experience in a financial institution or equivalent.
- Proven sales track record.
- CSC or IFIC certification completed or obtained within 12 months.
- Enrolled in Financial Planning or similar programs as part of continuing education.
- Experience providing credit solutions.
Knowledge / Skills
- Above-average analytical, interpersonal, business knowledge, and mathematical skills.
- Detailed knowledge of investments and good knowledge of lending and mortgages.
- Proficiency in computer applications such as Excel and Word.
- Strong communication skills for effective member interviewing.
- Problem-solving skills for resolving complex member issues.
- Negotiation skills for member solutions and sales.
