Job summary

Prairie Valley School Division is seeking a permanent full-time Assistant Facilities Supervisor at the Education Centre. The role leads maintenance operations, coordinates trades, and ensures safe, reliable building systems across division facilities.

Responsibilities include supervising technicians, planning preventative maintenance, and coordinating contractors. Strong leadership, safety knowledge, and experience with HVAC/electrical systems are essential for success in this education

Qualifications

  • Journeyperson certification or Building Systems Diploma required or equivalent.
  • Minimum five years in building maintenance or trades coordination.
  • Minimum three years supervising trades or maintenance staff.
  • Experience with mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of OH&S, WHMIS, lockout/tagout and safe work practices.

Role Overview:

The Assistant Facilities Supervisor – Trades & Systems works collaboratively as part of the Facilities team and is responsible for coordinating the delivery of facility maintenance, building systems operations, and technical services across all division facilities. The position provides day-to-day supervision and technical leadership to internal trades staff and maintenance technicians, oversees preventative maintenance programs, and ensures that building systems, mechanical equipment, and life safety infrastructure operate safely, reliably, and efficiently.

What you will do:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and support the work of maintenance technicians, plumbers, electricians, and contracted trades.
  • Prioritize, assign, and monitor maintenance tasks and work orders to ensure timely completion.
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing issues.
  • Ensure work is completed safely and in accordance with Division standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement preventative maintenance schedules for building systems, equipment, and components.
  • Ensure completion of regular inspections, servicing, and testing of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Monitor system performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability and efficiency.
  • Coordinate repairs, replacements, and upgrades based on condition assessments and work order data.
Building Systems Operations:
  • Oversee operation and performance of building, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and control systems.
  • Collaborate with IT/Contractors on building automation system (BAS) monitoring, adjustments, and optimization.
  • Provide support for indoor air quality troubleshooting and thermal comfort issues.
  • Ensure mechanical and electrical rooms are properly maintained and safe for staff and contractors.
Contractor Coordination:
  • Coordinate contracted services related to mechanical, electrical, roofing, lifts, and specialized building systems.
  • Review contractor performance, scope completion, and documentation requirements.
  • Assist with developing specifications and evaluating proposals for technical service contracts.
Operational Support & Technical Expertise:
  • Respond to complex work order issues requiring technical knowledge and problem-solving.
  • Review drawings, manuals, and technical documentation to support troubleshooting and planning.
  • Provide support for commissioning equipment and ensures proper turnover documentation is received.
  • Advice on lifecycle expectations and replacement planning for major systems and components.
Records, Reporting & Compliance:
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspections, and service logs in the computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).
  • Ensure regulatory and code requirements for life safety, electrical, and mechanical systems are met.
  • Prepare technical summaries and recommendations to support capital and maintenance planning.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Facilities Supervisor.
What will make you successful:
  • Journeyperson or certification in one of the following trades: Electrical, Plumbing, Refrigeration/HVAC, Power Engineer or a diploma in Building Systems Technology, Facility Maintenance, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field.
  • A Facility Management Professional (FMP) or equivalent designation would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum five years of experience in building maintenance, trades coordination, or technical facility operations.
  • Minimum three years of experience supervising or leading trades or maintenance staff.
  • Experience working with mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems in an institutional or commercial environment.
  • Knowledge of OH&S, WHMIS, confined space, lockout/tagout, and safe work practices.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and ability to travel between sites as required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, manuals, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices and asset lifecycle management.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in diagnosing and resolving building system issues.
  • Ability to coordinate and oversee the work of multiple trades and contractors.
  • Knowledge of codes, standards, and regulatory requirements related to building systems.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, computerized maintenance management software (CMMS) applications, and building automation system (BAS).
  • Ability to manage confidential material and maintain staff and student privacy.
