Job summary

The Vancouver School Board is seeking a Permanent Education Assistant On-Call to provide dedicated school and student support across assigned duties within the Vancouver District. The role supports students who need additional help and works under supervision of a senior team member.

Location is to be announced; program runs September through June each year, with a comprehensive benefits package, including pension, health, dental, life and disability coverages, plus vacation and gratuity days.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 and a Special Education Assistant program or related field with 2+ months of experience.
  • Ability to lift and position students up to 35 pounds; provide personal care as needed.
  • Willingness/ability to obtain Occupational First Aid (OFA) and CPI/MANDT training where applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Provides school & student support to assist school as assigned.
  • Under supervision, implements individual programs and contracts for students requiring non-regular classroom support.
  • Maintains progress records and discusses changes with the team.
  • Engages with community agencies as required.
  • Participates in field trips, sports, social, recreational and craft activities; supports community-based programming.
  • Assists students with social and emotional needs; supervises and guides as needed.
  • Prepares instructional aids and operates related equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Months: September to June each year

Salary: $32.62 per hour, 6.5 hours/day, 5 days/week

In this position, you will:
  • Provides school & student support to assist school as assigned
  • Under the direction of a senior member of the team, implement individual programs and contracts for students who are unable to function in a regular classroom setting
  • Jointly evaluates and maintains records of student progress through communication log; discusses with team members any changes which may be made to an individual student's program
  • Communicates and engages with community agencies as required
  • Participates in a wide variety of field trips, sports, social, recreational and craft activities
  • Supports students in community-based programming such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outings
  • Provides support to students with respect to their social and emotional needs
  • Supervises students, as required, and redirects and provides guidance as they occur
  • Assists in preparing instructional aid materials (eg. visual aides); sets up and operates instructional aid equipment
  • Perform other work within the job band as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field and over two (2) months of experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Lift and position students up to 35 pounds
  • Run after a student to avert them from danger
  • Provide personal care (including diaper changes, feeding etc)
  • Available to work full-time Monday to Friday
  • Where applicable, must possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid Certificate and will be required to perform Occupational First Aid duties if assigned by the Principal. OFA attendants may, at the direction of Employee Services, be required to perform emergency coverage at other locations
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (e.g., CPI or MANDT)
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written
The following are an asset:
  • An excellent practicum or work evaluation
  • Experience using techniques of Applied Behaviour Analysis
  • Completion of POPARD coursework
  • Ability to speak a second language
  • Experience providing Intensive Behavioural Intervention on a Home Team

  • Experienced EAs: current Principal, Vice Principal and previous Administrator and/or your most recent employer. We do not accept friends or teaching colleagues as references.

Itinerant Assignment:

A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties. Although in posted vacancies specific reference may be made to a school and to the duties associated with that assignment, Employee Services may transfer staff within the system in certain circumstances as deemed appropriate.
