Job summary

The Vancouver School Board is seeking a Permanent Education Assistant On-Call (SSA, EA) to provide school and student support. Responsibilities include implementing individual programs, maintaining progress logs, and engaging with community agencies.

This on-call position runs September to June with a 6.5 hour day, 5 days a week, at a salary of $32.62 per hour. Qualifications include a Grade 12 completion, completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field with at least two

Qualifications

  • Must have completed Grade 12
  • Completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field with 2+ months experience
  • Lift and position students up to 35 pounds
  • Available to work full-time Monday to Friday
  • OFA certificate may be required; CPI/MANDT training preferred
  • Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written
  • Assets: second language, strong practicum/work evaluations, POPARD coursework, intensive behavior supports

Responsibilities

  • Provide school and student support as assigned
  • Implement individual programs and contracts for students who need additional support
  • Evaluate and maintain progress records; communicate changes to the team
  • Coordinate with community agencies as needed
  • Participate in field trips, sports, and related activities
  • Support students in community-based programming and travel training
  • Provide support for students' social and emotional needs
  • Assist in preparing instructional materials and operating aids
  • Perform other duties within the job band as assigned

In this position, youwill:
  • Provides school & student support to assist school as assigned
  • Under the direction of a senior member of the team, implement individual programs and contracts for students who are unable to function in a regular classroom setting
  • Jointly evaluates and maintains records of student progress through communication log; discusses with team members any changes which may be made to an individual student's program
  • Communicates and engages with community agencies as required
  • Participates in a wide variety of field trips, sports, social, recreational and craft activities
  • Supports students in community-based programming such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outings
  • Provides support to students with respect to their social and emotional needs
  • Supervises students, as required, and redirects and provides guidance as they occur
  • Assists in preparing instructional aid materials (eg. visual aides); sets up and operates instructional aid equipment
  • Perform other work within the job band as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Completionof a Special Education Assistant program or related field and over two (2) months of experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Lift and position students up to 35 pounds
  • Run after a student to avert them from danger
  • Provide personal care (including diaper changes, feeding etc)
  • Available to work full-time Monday to Friday
  • Where applicable, must possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid Certificate and will be required to perform Occupational First Aid duties if assigned by the Principal. OFA attendants may, at the direction of Employee Services, be required to perform emergency coverage at other locations
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (e.g., CPI or MANDT)
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • The following are an asset:
    • An excellent practicum or work evaluation
    • Experience using techniques of Applied Behaviour Analysis
    • Completion of POPARD coursework
    • Ability to speak a second language
    • Experience providing Intensive Behavioural Intervention on a Home Team

Itinerant Assignment:

A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties.
