Under the Shelter Manager, you will handle HR matters, act in their absence, and collaborate with other DEWC teams to promote peer support within an anti-oppression, feminist framework.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledgeable about issues affecting women in DTES, including gender-based violence, mental health, homelessness and addictions, with trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to work and support staff in a busy, crisis-driven environment requiring prioritization.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills including record keeping and scheduling.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Shelter Program through planning, coordinating, scheduling and supervision of Peer Support staff.
  • Direct Peer Support staff and ensure services meet contract requirements and DEWC philosophy.
  • Handle human resources matters and act in the Shelter Manager's absence.
  • Collaborate with DEWC staff to promote peer support and integrated services.
  • Apply a feminist perspective and anti-oppression framework.

Job description

The Downtown Eastside Women's Centre (DEWC) exists to support and empower women and children, living in extreme poverty in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, who are particularly vulnerable to violence, exploitation, injustice and injury. Through low barrier Drop-In Centers and Emergency Shelters, DEWC provides basic need services, programs, and specialized supports to over 1000 women and children daily to help them survive the conditions that surround them. The Opportunity

The Peer Support Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the Shelter Program through effective planning, coordinating, scheduling, supervising, and directing Peer Support employees. She will ensure services meet the contract requirements as well as the philosophy, mission and mandate of DEWC. Under the direction of the Shelter Manager, the Supervisor is responsible for a range of human resources matters including acting in the absence of the Manager handling emergent and routine issues. The Peer Support Supervisor will work in collaboration with other DEWC staff to promote principles of peer support and integrated services to women. She will work from a feminist perspective and within an anti-oppression framework.

About You
  • You have a minimum of 2 years related experience in a supervisory position, preferable within a unionized environment.
  • You will promote and articulate the mission, mandate, philosophy, and values of DEWC.
  • You are knowledgeable of the issues impacting women in the dtes, including gender-based violence, mental health, homelessness, and addictions with an understanding of trauma-informed care responses.
  • You have the ability to both work and support staff, within a busy, chaotic, crises driven environment where there are multiple demands and prioritize.
  • You have efficient organizational and administrative skills including record keeping, scheduling, and problem-solving abilities
  • You have or will obtain a First Aid Certification and NVCI.
