Job summary

Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) seeks a Kitchen Trainer to prepare nutritious meals in a busy drop-in centre and night shelter in Vancouver. You will plan, serve, and maintain meals while supporting volunteers and working with staff from a feminist, anti-oppression framework.

Prerequisites include at least 2 years in a shelter or drop-in setting, knowledge of trauma-informed care, and First Aid/Food Safe/NVCI certifications. DEWC offers comprehensive benefits and generous leave.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years related experience in a drop-in and/or shelter environment.
  • Promote and articulate the mission, mandate, philosophy, and values of DEWC.
  • Knowledge of issues impacting women in DTES, including gender-based violence, mental health, homelessness, and addictions with trauma-informed care understanding.
  • Ability to work calmly in a busy, crisis-driven environment with multiple demands.
  • Strong conflict resolution skills and crises intervention training/experience.
  • First Aid Certification, Food Safe, and NVCI preferred or obtained.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nutritious meals within a busy drop-in centre and/or shelter.
  • Plan and prepare meals, serve, clean, and maintain kitchen areas.
  • Manage stock taking and ordering.
  • Support a training program for community volunteers in kitchen duties.
  • Collaborate with DEWC staff to promote integrated services for women.

Job description

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) exists to support and empower women and children, living in extreme poverty in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, who are particularly vulnerable to violence, exploitation, injustice and injury. Through low barrier Drop-In Centers and Emergency Shelters, DEWC provides basic need services, programs, and specialized supports to over 700 women and children daily to help them survive the conditions that surround them. The Opportunity

The Kitchen Trainer is primarily responsible for providing a nutritious meal within a busy and chaotic drop-in centre and/or emergency night shelter including meal planning and preparation, serving, cleaning and maintenance, customer service skills, stock taking and ordering. She will participate in supporting a relevant training program for community volunteers in all aspects of the kitchen. Reporting to the Kitchen Manager, she will collaborate with other DEWC staff to promote integrated services to women. She will work from a feminist perspective and within an anti-oppression framework.

About You
  • You have a minimum of 2 years related experience preferable within a drop in and/or shelter environment.
  • You will promote and articulate the mission, mandate, philosophy, and values of DEWC.
  • You are knowledgeable of the issues impacting women in the dtes, including gender-based violence, mental health, homelessness, and addictions with an understanding of trauma-informed care responses.
  • You have the ability to work calmly and respectfully within a busy, chaotic, crisis driven environment where there are multiple demands and prioritize.
  • You have strong conflict resolution skills and demonstrate crises intervention training and experience
  • You have, or will obtain, a First Aid Certification, Food Safe, and NVCI.
