Job summary

Red Deer Polytechnic seeks a Peer Support Navigator to develop and host a Recovery on Campus program for students. You will create structured, inclusive weekly sessions and resources, align with ROC Alberta funding, and track engagement while maintaining confidentiality.

Position Title Peer Support Navigator, Recovery on Campus

Position Summary

This position will work in alignment with requirements of Recovery on Campus Alberta funding and the goals of RDP’s Student Mental Health Strategy to develop and host a Recovery based peer support program for Students. Main areas of responsibility will be to create a structured Peer Support program to support students along the addiction-recovery spectrum, supplying resources, education, and various peer-support groups centered around inclusivity and all-pathways to recovery.

Position Responsibilities

Create Recovery based peer support programming:

  • Establish a structured outline of a welcoming and inclusive weekly program designed to support all RDP students in their unique pathway to Recovery
  • Document responsibilities and tasks for ease of coverage when required
  • Ensure programming supports various forms of recovery (including substance use and behavioural addictions)
  • Evaluate participant feedback to improve programming.
  • Recommend new initiatives based on student needs.
  • Assist with the development of recovery-focused educational resources

Host Peer Support Sessions:

  • Host two three-hour peer-support sessions weekly throughout the 2026-2027 academic year (Sept – April), arranging for coverage from volunteers or the ROC Coordinator when absent.
  • Build trusting, respectful relationships while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to peer support ethics and guidelines.
  • Maintain appropriate peer support boundaries by connecting students with appropriate resources and educational information while refraining from providing solutions or direct advice.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students seeking support in Recovery.
  • Maintain attendance records and program statistics.
  • Track student engagement while maintaining confidentiality.

Research up to date information and resources for students:

  • Ensure information and resources provided to students remain current and inclusive of all pathways to recovery.
  • Have a strong awareness of available RDP resources that students can utilize.

Promote Peer-Support and ROC programming to the student population:

  • Attend and host events or pop-up tables to promote Peer-Support meetings and programming.
  • Promote Recovery on Campus services and programming to the RDP community.
  • Use creative and engaging strategies to reach diverse student populations.
  • Present program information to various teams, groups, and committees at RDP .
  • Develop and distribute promotional materials.
  • Build awareness through classroom presentations, campus events, and outreach activities.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent to about 12 years of schooling.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of a 1-year college certificate, one year University or equivalent
  • Professional understanding of substance use, addiction and recovery, with education and ability to advocate for an all paths to recovery model of support
  • One to two years’ experience using a variety of techniques for successful program delivery, both virtually and in person and have excellent presentation skills which lean on learning and development best practice to engage students effectively
  • Ability and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse student and staff population as well as a proven commitment to anti-oppression, equity, and inclusion
  • Demonstrated aptitude with computer software and programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, and content management systems
  • Demonstrated aptitude with social media tools and web applications
  • Excellent interpersonal and online communication skills
  • Previous event planning experience may be considered an asset
  • Comfortable having difficult and vulnerable conversations with individuals
  • Understanding of and ability to maintain confidentiality

Salary $23.15 / hour

Benefits and Compensation Information

An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
