Job summary

Good Shepherd Centres in Hamilton, Ontario seeks a compassionate support worker to provide crisis, face-to-face and group support to clients at the Barrett Centre. You will facilitate peer groups, assist with activities, and help clients manage symptoms while promoting self-care and recovery in a respectful, anti-racist environment.

Experience with mental health/addictions, strong interpersonal skills, and comfort with electronic documentation are essential.

Qualifications

• Experience or lived experience in mental health/addictions systems.
• Understanding of the Recovery Model and crisis contexts.
• Willing to share recovery experiences and successes.
• Motivational skills to encourage others.
• Ability to use electronic documentation systems.
• Knowledge of community-based agencies and services.
• Peer Support training is preferred; social services education is an asset.
• Empathy with diverse psychiatric symptoms and issues.
• Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
• Computer literacy including Word and Excel.
• Commitment to anti-racist/anti-oppressive practice and company values.
• Second language is an asset.
• Awareness of health and safety practices.

Responsibilities

• Provide face-to-face, telephone crisis and group support to clients as needed.
• Lead peer groups/workshops on coping techniques and skill development.
• Assist clients with activities during their stay.
• Support symptom management and self-care strategies for clients.
• Share information about self-help programs in the community.
• Provide messages of hope and encouragement within professional boundaries.
• Suggest resources (books, workbooks, tapes, videos) that aid therapy.
• Commit to Recovery and Harm Reduction models in practice.
• Adhere to Health and Safety programs and policies to minimize risk.
