Sureway Construction Group Ltd. in Edmonton, AB seeks a Payroll Lead to manage full-cycle payroll, mentor staff and ensure accurate bi-weekly payroll. The role covers multiple CBAs, compliance with regulations, and leadership of the payroll team in a fast-paced construction environment.

The successful candidate will have PCP designation, extensive payroll knowledge, strong Excel skills and a proven ability to handle confidential information with integrity.

Qualifications

  • Eight+ years in full-cycle payroll with 2–3 years in lead/supervisor roles.
  • Experience in construction payroll; unionized environment a plus.
  • PCP designation is required.
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting or Business is a plus.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Lead full-cycle hourly payroll; bi-weekly pay runs.
  • Oversee two Collective Bargaining Agreements within payroll.
  • Provide leadership to the payroll team and day-to-day operations.
  • Reconcile accounts and maintain accurate reporting.
  • Address payroll inquiries from managers and staff.
  • Stay current with payroll legislation and policy changes.
  • Lead government remittances, year-end T4 balancing and reporting.

Payroll Lead

Sureway Construction Group of Companies is recruiting for a highly experienced and professional Payroll Leadto join our team!

Location: Edmonton, AB (9175 – 14 Street NW) Please note: there is no direct access to public transportation.

Hours: Monday-Friday; 8:00am – 4:30pm (IN-OFFICE)

Expectations: This is an all-encompassing role; you will wear many hats, all the way from payroll clerk to payroll lead. You not only welcome the opportunity to be fully active in the day to day functions of the payroll department, it’s your preference. You have exceptional knowledge and qualifications to support a payroll team.

Payroll Lead Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:

  • Eight (8) + years’ experience in full cycle payroll; with 2-3 of those years as a lead/supervisor.
  • Experience in the construction industry is an asset. Experience in a unionized payroll environment is an asset.
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is required.
  • Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designation is an asset.
  • Completion of post-secondary education in Accounting or Business is an asset.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Specifically strong in Excel).
  • Excellent knowledge of payroll principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with Service Canada processes and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of income tax forms, ROE’s, T4’s, health benefits programs, vacation pay, RRSP, Pensions, WCB, etc.
  • Knowledge and working understanding of the Alberta Employment Standards Code.
  • Proven leader with strong coaching and mentoring skills.
  • High degree of quality in regards to; attention to detail, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to keep a high level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Extremely reliable, mature and professional.
  • Highly resourceful, intuitive and flexible.
  • Ability to work independently and multitask, as well as work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong aptitude for Payroll systems, experience with Explorer Contract Manager is an asset.

Payroll Lead Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Lead full-cycle hourly payroll ensuring pay for employees is accurate and on-time; payroll cycles are bi-weekly pay runs.
  • Lead two (2) Collective Bargaining Agreements within the payroll system and ensure the organization is complying with those agreements.
  • Provide leadership to the payroll team and oversee the day-to-day operations and effectiveness of the payroll staff.
  • Reconcile account balances for the purpose of maintaining accurate reporting and complying with related policies, practices and/or regulations.
  • Researches discrepancies of payroll information and/or documentation (e.g. time sheets, leave time, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accuracy and adherence to procedures prior to processing.
  • Professionally responds to questions and provide information to managers, staff, and departments on payroll matters.
  • Maintains awareness of current payroll legislation and coordinates policy, system and or other required changes as they develop.
  • Lead government remittances and provides summaries and reports.
  • Year end T4 balancing and reporting.
