Soletanche Bachy Canada is seeking a Payroll Administrator to join our Ontario operations in Hamilton. You will support end-to-end payroll processing for hourly and salaried staff across multiple provinces using Payworks, ensuring accuracy and compliance with provincial laws.

The role requires 2+ years in full-cycle payroll, union and non-union experience preferred, strong Excel skills, and attention to detail. We offer a collaborative team environment and opportunities for professional growth.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Payroll Administration, Accounting, Finance, HR, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of full-cycle payroll experience in a multi-provincial environment.
  • Experience administering unionized payroll and understanding collective agreements preferred.
  • Knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation across provinces.
  • Proficiency with payroll systems; Payworks is a strong asset.
  • Intermediate Excel skills (formulas, pivots, lookups) and data analysis.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with end-to-end payroll processing for unionized and non-unionized employees across multiple provinces.
  • Maintain payroll databases and ensure accurate time entry and data integrity.
  • Process payroll using Payworks and prepare T4s and ROEs.
  • Respond to payroll inquiries and support internal and external audits.
  • Manage payroll remittances (WCB, union dues, group insurance, RRSP) and reporting.
  • Collaborate with sites to resolve time entry issues and ensure compliance.
  • Protect confidentiality and maintain privacy standards.
  • Assist with payroll-related reports and ad hoc data analysis.

Key Responsibilities of the Role

  • Assist with the end-to-end processing of payroll for unionized and non-unionized hourly and salaried employees across multiple provinces, including supporting payroll administration for 11 union groups (4 in Eastern Canada and 7 in Western Canada), ensuring compliance with applicable provincial legislation, collective agreements, internal payroll procedures, and regulatory requirements, including the preparation of T4s and Records of Employment (ROEs).
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date payroll databases, ensuring all employee, project, and payroll-related information is properly captured, validated, and recorded to support payroll processing and reporting requirements.
  • Accurately process payroll using the Payworks platform.
  • Maintain accurate and organized payroll records for data entry, calculations, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with work sites to ensure accurate time entry and resolve related issues; assist with time entry as needed.
  • Perform audits of payroll data to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Process employee changes and adjustments, ensuring appropriate authorization and adherence to deadlines.
  • Update and maintain payroll records to reflect changes in employee status, including exemptions, job titles, departments, and divisions.
  • Respond to payroll-related inquiries from employees, finance departments, and government agencies.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing relevant payroll documentation and information.
  • Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies through thorough data analysis.
  • Process payroll-related remittances, including WCB, union dues, group insurance benefits, and RRSP contributions, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
  • Assist with payroll-related reports using Excel and internal systems.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with privacy standards in handling employee payroll information.
  • Foster a collaborative and professional work environment, contributing positively to team dynamics.

Qualifications – What Will Make You Successful

Education

  • Post-secondary education in Payroll Administration, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.

Experience

  • 2+ years of full-cycle payroll experience, preferably in a multi-provincial, hourly and salary environment.
  • Experience administering unionized payroll and basic understanding of collective agreements is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with payroll audits, reconciliations, and payroll-related reporting.

Technical Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, employment standards, and statutory requirements across multiple provinces is an asset.
  • Proficiency with payroll systems; experience with Payworks is considered a strong asset.
  • Basic to Intermediate skills in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, lookups, and data analysis.
  • Experience supporting benefit and pension/RRSP remittances, union dues, and Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) remittances is strongly preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
