Job summary

Baine Johnston is seeking a Payroll & Benefits Administrator to join our St. John's team. This role will independently manage bi-weekly payroll for two local Newfoundland & Labrador companies using ADP/WFN, and administer group benefits with accuracy and compliance.

You will respond to inquiries, handle year-end T4s, coordinate leave, and work with leadership to improve payroll processes. A 5-year track record in payroll and a payroll designation are preferred; we offer a competitive package and

  • Certified Payroll Designation through the National Payroll Institute (NPI) is preferred.
  • A Diploma or Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, HR, or related field is an asset.
  • Understanding of payroll-related employment legislation.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Job description

Baine Johnston is currently seeking a Payroll & Benefits Administrator to join our team in St. John's. The Payroll & Benefits Administrator will independently manage payroll and benefits while ensuring accuracy, compliance and exceptional service to employees. This is a permanent, full-time opportunity.

THE POSITION
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely processing of bi-weekly payroll, comprised of a mix of hourly, salaried and commission-based pay, using ADP/WFN payroll software, for two local Newfoundland & Labrador companies.
  • Administration of benefits and group RRSP plans, handling remittances, enrolments, plan changes and terminations
  • Identifying potential improvements in payroll and control processes, ensuring that identified opportunities are implemented successfully
  • Month end reconciliation of various accounts, including health & dental benefits, HAPSET, workers compensation, income tax, CPP, EI etc.
  • Coordinate leave process (e.g. vacation, sick, short-term disability, bereavement, maternity/paternity, etc.)
  • Respond to inquiries from managers and employees regarding payroll, benefits and expenses in a timely manner
  • Complete accurate year-end reconciliation and annual production of T4s and other tax documents as required
  • Maintain payroll records for internal and external requirements, such as yearly audit for external auditors
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of new hires, terminations and wage increases
  • Assist with the creation of offer letters, onboarding, reporting and other documentation as requested
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will likely possess:

  • 5 years of progressive payroll experience
  • Ideally holds a Certified Payroll Designation through the National Payroll Institute (NPI)
  • A Diploma or Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field considered an asset.
  • Understanding of Employment legislation related to payroll
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Accuracy and attention to detail is critical
  • Strong initiative and self-motivation skills
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization and time management skills to deal with strict deadlines
  • Proven ability to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced deadline driven environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills
  • Strong aptitude for computer systems and software
  • Demonstrated ability to work co-operatively in a tightly knit team and individually
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (e.g. Outlook, Excel, Word) and payroll processing / HRIS software (Baine Johnston uses ADP/WFN but experience with ADP/WFN is not a mandatory requirement.)
  • Employee relations experience is considered an asset.
