Job summary

Masco Canada is hiring a Payroll & Benefits Specialist to join the Payroll & Total Rewards team on-site in St. Thomas, ON. You will ensure accurate payroll processing for unionized and salaried employees and administer comprehensive benefits programs.

You’ll handle tax withholdings, pension contributions, deductions, and year-end activities while collaborating with managers and carriers to resolve issues. This role emphasizes compliance, confidentiality, and process improvement.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in HR, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience in payroll and benefits administration.
  • Experience processing unionized payroll in a high-volume environment.
  • Experience with payroll systems such as Workday, ADP, Ceridian Dayforce, UKG, SAP, or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Process bi-weekly unionized hourly and salary payroll accurately and on schedule.
  • Calculate and validate regular earnings, overtime, shift premiums, standby pay, and other provisions.
  • Process status changes, promotions, leaves, and terminations; manage deductions and remittances.
  • Prepare and submit payroll-related government filings and remittances.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Reporting to the Manager, Payroll & Total Rewards, the Payroll & Benefits Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll and administration of employee benefits programs. This role ensures compliance with applicable payroll legislation, company policies, Collective Bargaining Agreement, and benefit plan requirements while providing exceptional support to employees and stakeholders regarding payroll, pension, and benefits-related inquiries.

Key Responsibilities
Payroll Administration
  • Process bi-weekly unionized hourly and salary payroll accurately and on schedule
  • Calculate and validate regular earnings, overtime, shift premiums, standby pay, call-in pay, retroactive pay, and other collective agreement provisions
  • Process employee status changes, promotions, temporary assignments, leaves of absence, and terminations
  • Ensure payroll deductions, earnings, taxable benefits, and statutory remittances are processed correctly
  • Audit payroll transactions and reports to identify and resolve discrepancies
  • Administer payroll deductions including taxes, benefits, pension contributions, union dues, garnishments, and voluntary deductions
  • Prepare and submit payroll-related government filings and remittances, including income tax, CPP/QPP, EI, garnishments, and other statutory deductions
  • Ensure compliance with employment standards, tax legislation, collective agreements, and organizational policies
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and support documentation for audit purposes
  • Validate overtime eligibility, vacation balances, sick leave, and other absence entitlements.
  • Collaborate with managers to resolve timekeeping issues
  • Support year-end payroll activities, including T4s, pension reporting, and audits
Benefits Administration
  • Administer employee benefit programs, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, wellness, pension and retirement savings plans
  • Coordinate employee enrollments, changes, terminations, and beneficiary updates
  • Liaise with benefit carriers, pension providers, and third-party vendors to resolve issues and ensure accurate plan administration
  • Monitor employee eligibility and maintain accurate benefits records
  • Organize employee benefit awareness/education sessions and support employee communications
  • Assist employees with benefits-related inquiries and claims issues
Compliance and Reporting
  • Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local payroll and employment legislation
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of employee information
  • Prepare payroll and benefits reports, metrics, reconciliations, and analysis for management
  • Assist with internal and external audits related to payroll and benefits
  • Stay informed of legislative and regulatory changes impacting payroll and benefits administration
Employee Support
  • Respond to employee questions regarding pay, benefits, and pensions
  • Educate employees on benefit programs, payroll practices, and self-service tools
  • Provide exceptional customer service while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism
Process Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll and benefits processes, controls, and efficiencies
  • Assist with payroll system upgrades, testing, and implementation projects
  • Develop and maintain payroll and benefits procedures and documentation
WHAT WILL YOU BRING?
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience in payroll and benefits administration
  • Experience processing unionized payroll in a high-volume environment
  • Experience with various payroll systems such as Workday, ADP, Ceridian Dayforce, UKG, SAP, or similar
  • Strong knowledge of collective agreements, employment standards, and payroll legislation
  • Understanding of employee benefits and pension plan administration
