Job summary

Emcon Services Inc. is seeking a Payroll Administrator for our Merritt, BC office. The role focuses on accurate and timely payroll processing across unionized and non-union employees, ensuring compliance with policies and legislation.

You will lead a small team, manage payroll audits and reconciliations, and collaborate with HR and Finance to optimize processes and data integrity. The position is full-time with a 40-hour week and a competitive salary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field with 2–3 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Minimum 1–2 years in a supervisory role overseeing payroll processes.
  • Experience with unionized and non-union payroll environments is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Excel and ERP/accounting systems; familiarity with policy and legislation.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for multiple employee groups, including unionized and exclusion (non-union) employees.
  • Prepare and transmit final payroll files to the bank with proper validation and approvals.
  • Interpret and apply collective agreements for BC unionized payroll and ensure regional compliance.
  • Supervise a team of three direct reports, including workload allocation and performance management.
  • Conduct audits, reconciliations, and payroll reporting to ensure accuracy before finalization.
  • Maintain exclusion employee records and align compensation, benefits, and deductions with policies.
  • Collaborate with HR and Finance to integrate data and payroll changes, and identify process improvements.

Full Time Position - Merritt, BC

Emcon Services Inc., a distinguished Canadian company with a proven track record of over 30 years as an interprovincial Road and Bridge Maintenance Contractor, is offering an exciting opportunity. We're looking for a motivated individual to join our team as a Payroll Administrator at our Corporate office in Merritt, BC.

Role Overview:
As Payroll Administrator at Emcon Services Inc., you will be responsible for overseeing the accurate and timely processing of payroll across multiple employee groups, including both unionized and exclusion (non-union) employees. This role ensures compliance with internal policies, collective agreements, and applicable legislation, while maintaining high standards of data integrity and confidentiality.

Key responsibilities
  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing, including regular and exclusion payroll cycles, ensuring all payments are accurate and completed on schedule.
  • Prepare and transmit final payroll files to the bank, ensuring proper validation, approvals, and adherence to deadlines.
  • Oversee payroll operations for unionized employees, including interpretation and application of collective agreements.
  • Provide specific oversight and support for British Columbia (BC) unionized payroll, ensuring regional compliance and accuracy.
  • Supervise and support a team of three direct reports, including workload allocation, training, performance management, and ongoing development.
  • Ensure payroll accuracy through regular audits, reconciliations, and review of payroll reports prior to finalization.
  • Maintain and validate exclusion employee records, ensuring correct setup of compensation, benefits, and deductions in alignment with company policies.
  • Collaborate with HR and Finance teams to ensure seamless integration of employee data, benefits administration, and payroll changes.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance payroll efficiency and accuracy.
  • Address payroll inquiries and resolve discrepancies in a timely and professional manner.
  • Monitor and maintain payroll accuracy through regular reporting, reconciliations, and quality checks.
  • This role requires strong attention to detail, in-depth knowledge of payroll processes (including unionized environments), and the ability to lead a team while managing multiple priorities effectively.
Key Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree with a minimum of 2-3 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Prior payroll experience; Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access) and accounting/ERP systems; experience with Explorer Contract Manager is a strong asset.
  • Understanding of BC Employment Standards Act, WorkSafeBC requirements, and payroll legislation.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines in a dynamic, multi-site environment.
  • High degree of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
What We Offer
  • Full-time position (40 hours/week) – Monday to Friday (8am to 4:30pm)
