Job summary

Nova Scotia Health Authority’s Nutrition and Food Services is hiring a Casual Utility Worker to assist in patient and retail food service, including meal selection, preparation, service, delivery, and sanitation. You will support safe food handling, inventory, and menu duties while ensuring quality patient care and customer service.

The role involves standing, lifting up to 35–40 lbs, and working days/evenings/weekends/holidays.

Qualifications

• Grade 12/GED or equivalent; demonstrated skills and/or relevant work experience acceptable with notes in cover letter/resume
• Demonstrated competency in English and basic Math
• Restaurant experience is considered an asset
• Customer Service Skills considered an asset
• Ability to work as part of a team to provide services and achieve departmental and/or organizational goals
• Ability to perform duties within expected timeframes and standards of accuracy

Responsibilities

• PATIENT MEAL SELECTIONS (CUSTOMER SERVICE) - Answering patient phone calls and entering meal selections on a computer as applicable.
• PATIENT MEAL SELECTIONS (CUSTOMER SERVICE) - Visiting patients in their room and entering meal selections on an electronic tablet.
• PRODUCT/FOOD PREPARATION/ASSEMBLY AND SERVICE - Assemble, portion, and serve patient, and visitor meals.
• PRODUCT/FOOD PREPARATION/ASSEMBLY AND SERVICE - Portion and assemble nourishments, special feedings, beverages, menu items, prepare “mix & serve” menu items.
• Salad and sandwich preparation.
• DELIVERY AND COLLECTION - Delivery and distribution of selective menus and patient meals.
• DELIVERY AND COLLECTION - Delivery of nourishments, supplies (food and non-food).
• DELIVERY AND COLLECTION - Collection of soiled patient trays.
• FOOD HANDLING - Receiving and storing supplies using FIFO; interpret patient diet/meal orders and confirm requirements.
• FOOD HANDLING - Inventory management.
• MENU DUTIES - Generate and print menus, reports, tallies and labels.
• FOOD SAFETY AND SANITATION - Clean and sanitize dishes, utensils, equipment, and work area.
• FOOD SAFETY AND SANITATION - Maintain basic work area safety and sanitation
• FOOD SAFETY AND SANITATION - Safe food handling and hygiene
