Reporting to the Manager, Youth Services, the Youth Support Worker is responsible for administering all activities of the Haisla Nation Council’s youth program in accordance with policies, procedures and licensing. This includes engaging youth in programs that build strength, confidence and resiliency; supervising and supporting them throughout the activities; and ensuring welcoming, safe and well-maintained facilities and services that accommodate the diverse needs of all youth.

Organizational Status

The Haisla Nation is the band government of the Haisla people. Our mission is to build a powerful, prosperous and proud community, healthy in mind, body and spirit. We believe in building a strong and thriving community, with healthy and happy members and a sustained and prosperous environment. We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise children while observing and supporting learning through developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Monitor the youth center for hazards and take preventative action as required to ensure the environment is healthy and safe for all children.
  • Work cooperatively with the staff team, other departments, and community resources to support inclusive practice and address the needs of individual children, thus ensuring all children have access to services.
  • Participate in and support the planning and implementing of scheduled programming, including set-up and clean up.
  • Stay informed daily on children's allergies, special conditions or other pertinent information.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all information related to the children, families, and personnel and fulfill obligations to respect protection of privacy.
  • Comply with licensing requirements and the youth centre’s procedures for maintaining health records, administering medication and first aid.
  • Ensure cleanliness and food safe practices are followed.
  • Report all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the Manager, Youth Services, or designate and record such incidents in the confidential logbook and as a reportable incident, as required.
  • Report all incidents or alleged incidents of child abuse as required and follow Centre procedures, regional protocols and government legislation.
  • Invite families to engage in various meaningful activities whenever they are available and interested.
  • Maintain ethical standards of the childcare profession in the youth centre including maintaining continuing competency and building capacity in performance.
  • Participate in the annual performance review process and develop and carry out an annual professional development plan.
  • Follow the Haisla Nation Council Personnel Policy and Manual.
  • Other duties as requested by the Manager, Youth Services.

Skills & Qualifications

  • High-school diploma or equivalent.
  • Responsible Adult, ECE, or ECE Assistant certification.
  • Current Infant/Child First Aid.
  • Mental Health First Aid.
  • Experience in child and youth care or social service an asset.
  • Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of public health and childcare licensing regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and various databases, search engines and Outlook/email.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
  • Passion for ongoing professional development and growth.
  • Valid BC driver’s license and own vehicle is an asset.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Salary Range: $22.95/hr - $27.00/hr
