Job summary

Algonquin College is hiring a part-time Custodian for the Pembroke campus. Duties include light and heavy cleaning, floor care, setup/breakdown for events, and basic safety tasks. On-site work with a 24-hour weekly schedule, starting October 12, 2026.

Requirements: high school or equivalent; at least two years of custodial experience in an institutional or commercial setting; a valid Ontario driver’s license; and a satisfactory criminal background check. Payband D; $27.64–$32.01 per hour.

Job Description

Light and heavy duty caretaking duties including basic safety and security. Performs basic routine custodial duties related to the care and cleaning of assigned building/ area and set up/breakdown of events, intermediate and advanced project cleaning and floor care, delivery of supplies as required.

As directed by Building Services Coordinator and/or Manager of Facilities

Please note that a satisfactory criminal background check is required for this position. A valid driver's license equivalent to an Ontario Class G license is also required, as driving is an essential duty of the role. Proof of a valid driver's licence will be required upon hire.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Perform general caretaking duties to ensure a clean, safe and healthy working environment for
  • Heavy cleaning duties such as washing and waxing floors, washing walls, vacuuming carpets, damp mopping floors, re-lamping light fixtures, collection of large recycle containers for cardboard, papers, cans and glass;
  • Light cleaning duties such as dusting, emptying and cleaning paper baskets, cleaning of whiteboards/chalkboards, polishing of glass and furniture, cleaning windows and maintaining necessary supplies;
  • Exterior duties including disposal of refuse, sweeping, shovelling snow, sanding, salting and removing ice from entrances;
  • Changing light bulbs, moving furniture, reporting building damage or repairs needing attention.
• Operate, adjust and maintain mechanized equipment to departmental standards (e.g. walk-behind floor machines, ride-on floor scrubbers, buffers and vacuum cleaners, upholstery and carpet extraction/cleaning);
• Set up and break down of program and special events including tables, chairs, stages, partitions, curtains, coat racks etc.;
• Assist with safety and security
  • Carries assigned master keys;
  • Assists with evacuation of students and staff during fire evacuation drills and emergencies;
  • Ensures that assigned work areas are safe and secure;
  • Traps and removes birds and rodents that may have entered building.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Up to High School or Equivalent;
• Minimum two (2) years experience Custodial/caretaking in an institutional or commercial environment.

Schedule up to 24 hours per week.
