Job summary

Algonquin College’s Centre for Accessible Learning in Ottawa is seeking an Accessible Learning Advisor to guide students on accessibility services and coordinate accommodations across the student journey.

The role reports to the Manager and involves assessing learning needs, developing compensatory strategies, and promoting inclusive education through Universal Design and outreach activities.

Qualifications

• Minimum four-year degree or equivalent in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or Disability Studies.
• At least five years interpreting medical documentation to inform academic accommodations in accessibility roles.
• Experience with persons with disabilities in clinical or post-secondary settings; knowledge of disability models.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized academic accommodation advising and learning strategy support to students with disabilities.
• Review disability documentation and develop Letters of Accommodation with faculty and partners.
• Collaborate with faculty to ensure consistent implementation of accommodations across settings.
• Support students in developing self-advocacy and accessing academic, technological, and financial supports.
• Deliver learning strategies programming to improve organization and self-regulation.
• Coordinate referrals to counselling services, assistive technology, and external assessors as required.
• Maintain confidential case records per privacy policies.
• Contribute to outreach and recruitment activities, including orientation and information sessions.
• Develop and deliver accessibility workshops and resources for students and staff.
• Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to promote accessible learning environments.

Job Description:

Reporting to the Manager, The Centre for Accessible Learning, the Accessible Learning Advisor is responsible for informing and guiding students on accessibility services and academic accommodations and coordinating services to remove educational barriers for students with disabilities.

The Accessible Learning Advisor works with students at any point during their academic career from pre-enrolment to graduation, to understand student academic accommodation needs and coordinate access to physical and other resources, technologies, counselling and formal assessments. The Accessible Learning Advisor also serves as an institutional resource, providing guidance on accessibility policies, legislative compliance and the social model of accessibility, including Universal Design to ensure an inclusive learning environment.

The Accessible Learning Advisor is responsible for conducting learning needs assessments and developing customized, compensatory learning strategies that enhance academic performance despite disability-related barriers to learning. These strategic approaches will be based on proven psychological theories of learning and processing deficits. They will also enhance social/cognitive development in the college environment.

The Accessible Learning Advisor has a coordinating role in planning/participating in CAL events and workshops, creating and maintaining accessibility resources for faculty and staff, and orientation and outreach events. The incumbent represents the College in collaboration with community partners and external accessibility committees, advocating for best practices in educational accessibility and inclusion.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provides individualized academic accommodation advising and learning strategy support to students with disabilities to promote access, inclusion, and academic success
• Reviews disability-related documentation and develop, implement, and maintain Letters of Accommodation in collaboration with students, faculty, and internal partners
• Consults with faculty and staff to support effective and consistent implementation of academic accommodations across classroom, laboratory, online, and placement settings
• Supports students in developing self-advocacy skills, understanding functional limitations, and accessing appropriate academic, technological, and financial supports
• Delivers one-on-one and group learning strategies programming to enhance students’ academic performance, organization, and self-regulation skills
• Coordinates referrals to counselling services, assistive technology, financial aid, and external assessment professionals as required
• Maintains accurate, confidential case records and documentation in accordance with privacy legislation and college policies
• Contributes to outreach, transition planning, and recruitment activities, including orientation events, workshops, and information sessions
• Develops and delivers accessibility-related workshops and resources for students, faculty, and staff
• Collaborates with internal departments and external community partners to support student success and promote accessible learning environments
• Performs other related duties in support of the Centre for Accessible Learning and institutional priorities
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum four (4) year degree or equivalent: Education, psychology, social work, disability studies or equivalent
• Minimum of five (5) years in:
  • Experience working within a medical model interpreting medical documentation and applying functional limitation information to inform academic accommodation planning within a non-clinical accessibility advising role.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities in a clinical and/or post-secondary educational setting;
  • Knowledge of social and medical models of disability support;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of psychosocial and academic aspects of disability;
