Job summary

The Town of Canmore is seeking a Parks & Cemetery Coordinator to support the Public Works team by managing cemetery operations, coordinating parks administration, and serving as the Parks SharePoint administrator. The role blends office coordination with field responsibilities to serve residents and visitors of Canmore.

Responsibilities include processing permits, maintaining records, and collaborating with internal departments and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Two years of administrative or customer service experience in a municipal, public sector, or community-focused environment.
  • Commissioner for Oaths (Province of Alberta) appointment. Required (may be obtained post-hire).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for data compilation and reporting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to interact professionally with diverse audiences, including the public during sensitive circumstances.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, and pay close attention to detail in database and documentation management.
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated ability to quickly learn cemetery operations, regulations, and the Alberta Cemeteries Act.
  • Experience coordinating with multiple internal departments and external interest holders to facilitate project completion.

  • Process burial permits, interment requests, and cemetery-related documentation in compliance with the Alberta Cemeteries Act.
  • Maintain detailed cemetery databases and mapping systems to ensure accurate lot records and information retrieval.
  • Coordinate with funeral homes, families, and internal teams to facilitate seamless cemetery operations.
  • Respond professionally to complaints and sensitive client issues with diplomacy and respect.
  • Provide administrative coordination to the Parks team including scheduling, correspondence, and file management.
  • Support departmental projects through research, data compilation, and stakeholder communication.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and databases related to parks operations and maintenance.
  • Assist with budget tracking, invoicing, and financial documentation as required.
  • Serve as primary administrator for the Parks SharePoint site, ensuring current and organized content.
  • Update documents, schedules, and resources to support team collaboration and information sharing.
  • Train team members on site navigation and usage to maximize effectiveness.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with internal departments, interest holders, contractors, and the public.
  • Coordinate meetings and maintain documentation of discussions, decisions, and action items.
  • Support relationship-building between Parks, Cemetery operations, and community members.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office Suite—particularly Excel—to compile, analyze, and present operational data.
  • Generate reports on cemetery operations, parks activities, and departmental metrics.
  • Maintain attention to detail and accuracy in all records, databases, and communications.
  • Fulfill worker responsibilities under the Town of Canmore Health & Safety Directive.
  • Participate in the Town's health and safety program, following all safety legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform work safely and protect the health and safety of yourself and others.
  • Refrain from causing or participating in harassment or violence.
  • Report incidents, injuries, and unsafe or harmful worksites, acts, or conditions.

Position Overview

The Parks & Cemetery Coordinator is a multifaceted role within the Public Works team, reporting to the Supervisor of Parks. The position provides administrative and operational support to the Parks team, coordinates cemetery operations and customer service, serves as the primary administrator of the Parks SharePoint site, and supports departmental projects through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. The role includes both office-based and field responsibilities.

Cemetery Operations & Customer Service
  • Manage cemetery records, permits, and customer inquiries with accuracy and empathy for families during sensitive times
  • Process burial permits, interment requests, and cemetery-related documentation in compliance with the Alberta Cemeteries Act

  • Familiarity with municipal budgeting, invoicing, or financial tracking processes
  • Experience with cemetery mapping software or geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Knowledge of Alberta health and safety legislation and workplace safety programs
  • Demonstrated experience managing sensitive client interactions with diplomacy and empathy
Salary & Benefits
  • Hourly Rate- $35.85 - $39.35 per hour. Compensation will be calculated based on the successful candidate’s related work experience/education and internal equity considerations.

Work Schedule

This is an office-based full-time permanent position. Monday to Friday, 8.00 am – 4.30 pm. Scheduled hours may vary based on operational needs.
