Job summary

The City of Vancouver seeks Park Rangers to protect and enhance the experience across 200+ parks. You will enforce park bylaws, provide information and first aid, and assist vulnerable populations while coordinating with City departments and volunteers to maintain safe, welcoming park spaces.

Responsibilities include monitoring events, guiding park users, and performing routine safety checks in varying weather conditions. Strong communication and de-escalation skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Formal education requirements include Grade 12 or equivalent and First Aid/CPR.
• First Aid/CPR certification is required; security license is an asset.
• Ability to enforce park bylaws and provide guidance to park users.

Responsibilities

• Monitor parks for appropriate use and enforce Park Control Bylaw as needed.
• Assist vulnerable populations by directing them to appropriate services.
• Advise park users on regulations, facilities, hazards, and park conditions.
• Administer first aid and address complaints in parks or via 311.
• Ensure park facilities are accessible and secure, including gates and locks.
• Coordinate with City departments and partners for park operations.
• Carry out other duties as assigned.

Main Purpose and Function

The Park Ranger shares a commitment to community and enhancing the park experience for 200+ parks inVancouver. Parks include green spaces, picnic areas, sports fields, play areas, bike & hiking pathways, facilitiesbeaches and nature preserves. Working in collaboration with other City and Park Board Departments, stakeholders, volunteers, park watch programs and the public the Park Rangers are involved in public relations, parkpatrol and routine regulatory enforcement work. Monitor permitted activities including large special events, sportfield & facility use, picnics, weddings, and commercial recreation.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Monitor park for appropriate use enforcing the Park Control Bylaw when required.
• Work closely with the vulnerable population, connecting them with appropriate services when required.
• Provide advice, information, and direction to park users regarding park regulations, facilities, hazards, natural features and park conditions.
• Administer First Aid and attends to any complaint issues that may arise in parks or via 311.
• Ensures park users can use the park facilities harmoniously while preserving the integrity of the park system
• Monitors, unlocks, and locks Park facilities and gates as required to ensure optimal availability to park users.
• Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses related to the work and some related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED.
• Security Workers License is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Sound knowledge of operations, rules, bylaws and regulations governing the work performed.
• Sound knowledge of assigned park areas and facilities and hazards found therein.
• Sound knowledge how to work collaboratively and effectively with vulnerable population.
• Sound knowledge of de-escalation tactics, situational awareness and effective verbal communication.
• Working knowledge of the procedures for bylaw enforcement.
• Some knowledge of natural history and ecology of assigned area.
• Some knowledge of fire watch and traffic control practices and procedures.
• Ability to provide advice, assistance, information and direction to a variety of park users in a concise, courteous and tactful manner in sometimes difficult and sensitive circumstances.
• Ability to enforce rules, guidelines and regulations.
• Ability to perform Standard First Aid
• Ability to walk and/or ride a bicycle long distances and work in varying weather conditions.
• Ability and situational awareness to detect unusual situations and skill handling the same.
• Ability to arrange and successfully carry out a simple work schedule.
• Ability to keep routine records and act as a witness and conduct cases before a Justice of the Peace.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to perform routine repair and maintenance tasks as related to Park Operations.

A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.

• Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14days of this posting
• Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14days of this posting
• If you have less than fiveyears driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
