Job summary

City of Burnaby's Developed Parks unit is seeking a Parks Maintenance Worker responsible for maintenance, repair and minor construction in park and recreational areas, including care of sports fields, picnic and beach areas. The role involves supervising other staff, ensuring safety, enforcing park policies, and performing routine repairs using tools and equipment such as leaf blowers, mowers and power saws.

Schedule is 80 hours bi-weekly, Monday to Friday when possible.

Qualifications

• Up to high school graduation and sound experience in parks operations and maintenance tasks or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Knowledge of park areas, buildings, facilities and applicable rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of methods, practices and tools used in routine repair and maintenance.
• Knowledge of materials, tools and equipment for grass fields, picnic, beach areas.
• Ability to deal courteously with the public and explain park policies; operate equipment such as leaf blowers, ride on rollers, lawnmowers, weed eaters and power saw.
• Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment for lawn, turf and playground maintenance.
• A valid Class 5 Driver's License for British Columbia is required.

Job description

This position works in the Developed Parks organizational unit. This is maintenance, repair and minor construction work of some complexity involving the care and upkeep of one or more parks and recreational areas. An employee of this class may be responsible for maintenance and encouraging proper use of a park with assets such as picnic, barbecue and beach areas. This position is also responsible for the care of sports, playing fields, and related areas, litter collection, and the maintenance of park facilities and amenities. The work also entails the supervision of one or more subordinates engaged in related tasks. The incumbent exercises considerable independence and judgement in day to day functions but discusses or refers unusual or policy matters to a supervisor who checks the work to ensure maintenance of established standards. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include up to high school graduation and sound experience in parks operations and maintenance tasks or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the assigned park areas, adjacent buildings and facilities, and the rules and regulations governing the use of same. Sound knowledge of the methods, practices, and tools used in performing routine repair and maintenance tasks. Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintaining grass fields, picnic, beach and related areas. Ability to deal courteously with the public and explain park policies and rules; perform routine repair and maintenance tasks related to the work; operate equipment used in the work such as leaf blowers, ride on rollers, lawnmowers, gas powered weed eaters and power saw. Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment essential to the maintenance of lawn, turf and playground areas. A valid Class 5 Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia is required.

Schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM (Shifts range between Monday to Sunday from 6:30 AM – 3:30 PM)
