New Vista Housing in Burnaby, BC is seeking a Maintenance Technician (casual, part-time) to perform diverse maintenance, repair, and groundskeeping tasks across residential properties. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, you will handle plumbing, electrical, painting, and general upkeep to keep facilities safe and well maintained.

The role requires strong communication, the ability to work independently, and a valid BC Driver’s Licence.

Qualifications

  • Grade 10 education supplemented by two years of recent related maintenance experience.

Description

Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Maintenance Technician (casual basis) who will perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and groundskeeping duties to ensure the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the facility and equipment across our residential properties in the Burnaby area. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, this role involves general building maintenance, minor electrical and plumbing repairs, equipment maintenance, painting, carpeting and grounds upkeep while maintaining a safe environment for tenants, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

Performs general building maintenance and repairs, including furniture, walls, doors, floors, ceilings, windows, drywall, wood paneling, flooring, ceiling coverings, and glass. Constructs and installs items such as shelves, cupboards, and related fixtures.

Repairs and replaces plumbing fixtures and components, including sinks, toilets, water supply lines, and waste lines.

Troubleshoots and repairs equipment and appliances such as kitchen appliances, and related mechanical or electrical equipment. Performs maintenance tasks including disassembly, cleaning, lubricating, replacing defective parts, soldering connections, and conducting operational testing.

Installs and repairs electrical components including timers, switches, receptacles, ballasts, and lighting fixtures. Performs safety inspections on electrical appliances and equipment to identify defects such as faulty wiring or improper grounding.

Performs painting, finishing, and surface maintenance work using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment. Removes and replaces flooring and wall coverings including tile, linoleum, and carpeting as required.

Inspects plumbing, mechanical, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems and equipment. Reports deficiencies, malfunctions, and repair requirements to the Facilities Manager.

Maintains accurate records of maintenance, repair, inspection, and preventative maintenance activities in accordance with established procedures.

Moves and transports furniture, equipment, materials, and supplies as required.

Performs exterior and grounds maintenance duties including grass cutting, pruning, weeding, watering, litter collection, leaf removal, and snow and ice clearing to maintain safe access to facility grounds and walkways.

Identifies and reports hazards, unsafe conditions, accidents, unusual occurrences, and faulty equipment or furnishings to the Facilities Manager in a timely manner.

Supports tenant safety by reporting observations related to unsafe tenant circumstances or environmental concerns to the appropriate housing staff.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Abilities

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with tenants, staff, contractors, and the public.

Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.

Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, and machinery related to the work performed.

Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Working knowledge of safe work practices and occupational health and safety standards.

  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence.

Qualifications

Grade 10 education supplemented by two (2) years of recent related maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
