Job description

BP Canada has an exciting career opportunity for a Paper Mill Foreman based in Edmonton to join our team. This is a great chance to join a Top Employer and contribute to our growth and success.

Reporting directly to the Paper Mill Supervisor, this position is accountable for safety, reliability, material handling, employee relations, and engagement in a high-performance work team environment. The Paper Mill Foreman is responsible for in-house paper machine operations focusing on improving productivity and production while enhancing quality.

Must be able to lead the implementation of operations improvement opportunities and troubleshoot while establishing new procedures to enhance results. Will plan resources to ensure production targets are achieved, and be responsible for interviewing, training, and performance management of hourly employees.

Here’s what you’ll be responsible for in this role

  • Facilitate an environment where safety is the priority;
  • Comply with all applicable provincial and local environmental and safety regulations, as well as company policies and procedures;
  • Effectively manage production performance;
  • Partner with all departments of the mill to foster teamwork;
  • Provide leadership to department personnel to ensure personal and professional development of team members;
  • Coordinate production scheduling to meet customer demands and manage overtime;
  • Build and maintain productive employee relations, driving employee satisfaction;
  • Ensure proper company/union relations according to labor agreements;
  • Troubleshoot quality and operational issues and develop systems to prevent reoccurrences;
  • Establish high performance by following departmental goals and objectives;
  • Monitor compliance with standard operating procedures;
  • Ensure quality systems are supported, in place, and meet specifications;
  • Coordinate efforts with Maintenance, Operations, and Technical Departments as needed;
  • Identify long-term departmental improvement opportunities.

  • A technical degree (experience with multi-cylinder paper machines is an asset);
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in a production facility (pulp and paper experience is an asset);
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills;
  • Experience in a unionized manufacturing environment is an asset;
  • Strong leadership with excellent communication skills, high urgency, and attention to detail;
  • Ability to set and achieve challenging goals, prioritize tasks, and maintain organized systems to monitor progress;
  • Drive for continuous improvement, adaptability, and a willingness to challenge the status quo;
  • Problem recognition and systematic approach to resolving issues, including root cause analysis;
  • Ability to motivate teams, develop performance standards, and foster a positive work environment;
  • Attentiveness to detail and commitment to excellence, seeking ongoing improvements;
  • Experience with ERP systems and Microsoft Office.
