The Lax Kw’alaams Health Department has an exciting and immediate opening for a Part-Time Oral Health Worker. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for supporting and encouraging families to make oral health care a priority for themselves and their children. They educate families about healthy oral hygiene habits, promote healthy lifestyle choices, and provide guidance on proper brushing, flossing, and nutrition. They also conduct general oral health promotion activities and implement preventive measures to reduce the risk of tooth decay and other dental diseases in children and adults.
Responsibilities:
General
- Promote oral health awareness and provide oral health education to children and families within the community
- Plan, implement, and evaluate oral health promotion and disease prevention activities
- Collaborate with dentists, dental assistants, Community Health Representatives (CHRs), staff members, health professionals, and other departments to support the planning, coordination, and delivery of oral health programs and services
- Assist with the planning and delivery of oral health education initiatives in collaboration with CHRs, including prenatal sessions, school-based programs, community programs, community events, and outreach activities
- Assist clients with scheduling dental appointments and accessing available oral health services
- Obtain and maintain all required authorization, consent, and client documentation for service delivery
- Perform administrative duties related to the Oral Health Program, including maintaining accurate electronic and paper records, client files, reports, and statistics
- Coordinate client bookings and maintain accurate appointment schedules in preparation for visiting dental services
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure all client information is handled in accordance with applicable privacy legislation, Band policies, and professional standards
- Complete all mandatory training requirements
- Apply fluoride varnish in accordance with established protocols, training requirements, and professional standards
- Promote preventive oral health practices, including proper brushing and flossing techniques, healthy nutrition, routine dental examinations, and early intervention strategies
- Gather information and prepare oral health content for community newsletters, educational materials, and awareness campaigns
- Collect and maintain program data to support reporting requirements and program evaluation
- Perform all other duties within the scope of the position and as determined by the Health Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- High School Diploma (Required)
- Post-secondary education in health, community services, dental assisting, or a related field (Asset)
- Training and experience in Microsoft Word, electronic and paper record keeping, data management, and filing systems (Asset)
- Willingness and ability to complete all required training, certifications, and courses necessary to successfully perform the role, including additional training as assigned by the employer (Required)
Experience
- Experience working with children, families, and community members in a health, wellness, education, or support service setting (Asset)
- Experience providing health promotion, prevention education, or community outreach services (Asset)
- Experience working in a dental, healthcare, or community health environment (Asset)
- Experience with client scheduling, maintaining records, data entry, and administrative duties (Asset)
- Experience working collaboratively with healthcare professionals, community programs, and service providers (Asset)

Classification/Pay Scale
- $27.66/hr
- This position requires a flexible schedule of 21 hours per week, based on departmental and operational requirements
