Job summary

C.H.R.I.M., Max Rady College of Medicine in Winnipeg is seeking a grant-funded, full-time role to support early childhood oral health initiatives. The position involves recruiting participants, facilitating sharing circles, and coordinating dental screenings across Winnipeg and rural communities.

• Assist with Caries Risk Assessment implementation in primary care.
• Provide reports and updated data to project coordinator and study leadership; prepare ethics forms and status reports.

Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

• Completion of a Community College diploma in a related discipline from a recognized institution plus one year of directly related experience is required.
• Bachelor Degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

• Demonstrated experience in facilitating community groups is required.
• Experience in community development, community mobilization work is required.
• Experience in promoting health from a social determinants of health and health equity lens is required.
• Experience working within a community based organization with a diverse range of community groups and with vulnerable populations is required.
• Strong collaboration skills with demonstrated knowledge and experience working with individuals, families, groups, and communities, including community organizing, community building, empowerment models, conflict resolution and facilitation required.
• An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are required.
• Excellent communication skills including oral, written, and giving presentations required.
• Knowledge of existing community resources and agencies currently providing services to preschool children is required.
• Proficiency with computer software, Microsoft 2010 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.
• Ability to work independently, with team members, and meet deadlines is required.
• Must be able to work flexible hours, including some “after hours” when required.
• Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with community groups and services, which work with the project’s target population of parents/grandparents/caregivers of young children (family resource centers, day care, Headstart programs, First Nations Communities) is required.
• Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Class 5 driver’s license, access to a vehicle and the ability to travel to communities within the assigned area.
• Hiring for three positions.

Key responsibilities

• Help scale-up community capacity to improve children’s oral health and receive overall project guidance from the project coordinator.
• Build relationships with local programs and staff, which provide services to pre-school children and their caregivers and identify local opportunities to deliver workshops on Early Childhood Carries (EEC) prevention.
• Recruit participants for the intervention study and facilitate the sharing circles/focus group gatherings; book, schedule, and organize dental screenings both in Winnipeg and rural communities involved in the study.
• Follow up with all ECC workshop participants to encourage and support use of materials provided
• Assist in implementation of additional strategies that each community identifies is needed to prevent Early Childhood Caries (ECC).
• Assist with Caries Risk Assessment implementation in primary care.
• Provide reports and updated data to project coordinator and study leadership; compose and submit forms (annual reports, amendments, study status reports) for ethics approval throughout study.
• Other duties as assigned or required:
  • Purchasing and expense claims for study materials, managing supplies, and inventory.
  • Help with drafting of questionnaires, consent forms, focus group guides.
  • Create posters for presentations at different conferences.
  • Compose correspondence related to grant proposals (letters of support, summary pages, timelines).
  • Help with projects unrelated to study (updating CCVs, organizing focus groups, creating and completing hospitality forms, etc. for different study projects).
  • Setting up rooms and technology for meetings for the study and for meetings unrelated to study project (Telehealth Presentations, HSHC Intersectoral meetings, etc.).
