Job summary

The City of Barrie is hiring for an Operator 1 - Wastewater Collections. The role focuses on day-to-day operation of the wastewater collection system to ensure regulatory compliance and environmental protection.

You will be part of the Wastewater Operations Branch, operating and maintaining facilities and equipment with an emphasis on safety and efficiency. You will act as OIC for portions of the system, monitor data, and collaborate with internal teams to support service reliability.

Qualifications

• Two-year diploma in Environmental Technology or related field.
• Valid MECP Class I Wastewater Licence.
• Licences and certificates listed in the education section are required.
• Experience in wastewater collections and winter maintenance preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operate day-to-day equipment and systems for wastewater collections and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Act as Operator-in-Charge for assigned portions of the system.
• Monitor processes using instrumentation and data, adjust and maintain as needed.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used and time spent.
• Coordinate with stakeholders and provide high standard customer service.

The Opportunity

The Infrastructure Department is comprised of five Branches, including three Design and Construction Branches, the Wastewater Operations Branch, and the Water Operations Branch. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; and the design and construction of the City's infrastructure including treatment plants, pump stations, roads, sewers, watermains, sidewalks, stormwater management ponds, water towers and reservoirs, etc.

The City of Barrie Wastewater Operations Branch (WWOB) is responsible for the effective and efficientoperation and maintenance of all wastewater collection and treatment facilities servicing the municipality including a Class IV Treatment Facility and Class I and Class III Wastewater Collection Facilities. The WWOB ensures that the municipal sewage works are operated and maintained in accordance with applicable legislation including but not limited to the Environmental Protection Act (EPA), Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA), and the Occupational Health and Safety ACT (OHSA).

As a member of the Operations and Maintenance Section, the Operator 1 - Wastewater Collections is responsible for the day-to-day operation of all equipment, processes, and systems associated with the City of Barrie Class I wastewater collections infrastructure to ensure regulatory compliance, community health protection, environmental sustainability, and resource conservation. This position acts as the Operator-in-Charge (OIC) for assigned portions of the municipal wastewater collections system and utilizes performance data and instrumentation to monitor, evaluate, adjust, maintain and control the collections system.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

• Two (2) year College Diploma in Engineering Technology, Environmental Technology, or a related discipline
• Wastewater Collection Class I Licence from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation & Parks (MECP)
• Light Duty Plow with Hopper Competency Certificate OR a Good Roads Snow School Certificate
• Loader and Skidsteer Operator Training Certificate
• Valid OntarioClass "D" Driver's Licence with a "Z" endorsement in good standing
• One (1) year of experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position, including:
  • one (1) year of wastewater collection operator experience while holding an Operator-in-Training Wastewater Collections Operator License; and
  • one (1) year of experience with municipal winter roads maintenance and municipal sewage works construction

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

• General knowledge of Asset Managment Planning for Municipalities O.Reg 588/17
• Working knowledge of the following: Occupational Health andSafety Act (OHSA); Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA); Environmental Protection Act (EPA); Lake Simcoe Protection Act (LSPA); O.Reg 129/04 Licensing of Sewage Works Operators; Municipal Wastewater Collection System MECP Environmental Compliance Approvals; Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7; municipal wastewater collection system operation and maintenance; construction and maintenance of municpal linear infrastructure; heavyequipment operation and safety
• Thorough knowledge of roadway construction traffic safety approaches, and operation of manually controlled heavy construction tools such as compactors, saws,and hammers
• Demonstrated ability to:

Conditions of Employment

• Valid Ontario Class "D" Driver's Licence with a "Z" endorsement in good standing

Other Important Information

Hours: The normal hours of work are 40hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement

Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2026pay range:

• Yearly Salary: $ 81,868.80 to $98,134.40
• Hourly Pay Rate: $39.36 to $47.18
