Job summary

The City of Greater Sudbury is seeking a Wastewater Facility Operator to ensure efficient operation of its wastewater treatment assets. The role requires hands-on inspection, monitoring, and minor maintenance across CGS facilities, with a focus on safety and compliance.

Successful candidates will hold required Ontario wastewater certificates and have at least 1 year of related experience, plus be able to work on a seven-day, 24-hour shift if needed. Training and tours may be part of duties.

Qualifications

  • Secondary School diploma required.
  • Two-year post-secondary diploma asset.
  • Must possess Wastewater Treatment Level 1 and Wastewater Collection Level 1 certificates from OOP.
  • Minimum of one year operating experience in a wastewater facility.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Operator-In-Charge, overseeing operation and maintenance of CGS wastewater facilities.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure efficient facility operation.
  • Make small operational adjustments and repairs to maintain performance.
  • Monitor performance, document logs, and report issues to the supervisor.
  • Collect samples, perform laboratory tests, and maintain readings and records.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment, buildings, and grounds; perform light maintenance.
  • Maintain grounds including mowing and landscaping.
  • Work a seven-day, 24-hour shift schedule if directed.
  • Assist in training facility employees as directed.
  • Conduct plant tours for the public as directed.
  • Assist trades staff as required.
  • Develop knowledge of CGS Safety Manual and provincial legislation.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Initial Reporting Location: Sudbury Wastewater Treatment Plant

Job Status: Limited positions

Estimated Probable Duration: Seven (7) months

Number of Vacancies: 2

Union Affiliation: CUPE 4705 Outside Unit

Hours of Work: 80 hours bi-weekly

Shift Work Required: Yes

Range of Pay: $34.75 to $39.30 per hour

Main Function: Perform necessary operations to ensure the efficient operations of the facility.

Characteristic Duties

Under the supervision of a Wastewater Supervisor.

  • Act as Operator-In-Charge and assume responsibility for the operation and maintenance of CGS’s wastewater facilities and infrastructure.
  • Perform regular inspections of various facilities and perform the duties required to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the facility.
  • Make operational adjustments and minor repairs to maintain operating effectiveness of the facility.
  • Monitor and document facility and equipment performance, advise supervisor of problems to initiate corrective action.
  • Collect samples, perform laboratory tests; take readings and maintain records, operational logs and reports.
  • Assist in maintaining and repairing equipment, machinery and facilities. Perform minor maintenance on buildings, grounds and equipment including draining and cleaning facility components and structures.
  • Maintain grounds by watering, mowing or fertilizing lawns, shrubs or other related items.
  • Will be required to work on a seven (7) day / twenty-four (24) hour shift schedule, if directed.
  • Assist in training of facility Employees, as directed.
  • Conduct Plant tours for general public, as directed.
  • Assist tradespersons and maintenance staff as required.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications
Education and Training
  • Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade 12) Education.
  • Successful completion of a relevant two (2) year post-secondary diploma from a recognized college considered an asset.
  • Applicants must possess valid Wastewater Treatment and Wastewater Collection Level 1 Certificates from the Ontario Operator Certification Program. Successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain certification in good standing.
Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of operating experience in a wastewater facility.
Other Requirements
  • This role requires the use of tight-fitting respirators and employees must be clean-shaven where the mask seals. This is a Bona Fide Occupational Requirement (BFOR) under human rights legislation.
  • Must be able to complete operational logs and checklists, and CMMS work orders.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting and carrying 20 kgs.
  • Ability to perform confined space duties, including entry, mandatory.
  • Ability to use related software programs such as CSSM, MS Office, SCADA.
  • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
  • Provide, at own cost, a current Criminal Record Check.
  • Provide, at own cost, a Respirator Fit Test.
  • May require the use of a CGS vehicle on CGS business. Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's licence, and have an acceptable driving record.

This job is also being posted as a development opportunity. Should there be no fully qualified candidate for this position, a candidate who can be expected to meet the required qualifications within a reasonable period of time may be considered for this position as a development opportunity. Development opportunity range of pay: $33.01 to $37.34 per hour. The successful candidate will be paid at the reduced rate until the minimum qualifications have been met.
