The Public Works and Transportation Services (PWT) team delivers services that support the community in achieving its long-term vision of creating a green, attractive city where people can get around safely and easily. Transportation Services focuses on two main areas: transit and fleet. Transit involves planning and delivering affordable, convenient, efficient, reliable, safe, and customer-focused public transit. Fleet management provides responsive and effective fleet services to City divisions and agencies, emphasizing safety, environmental sustainability, and minimizing lifecycle costs. These services aim to optimize community benefits, enhance infrastructure sustainability, achieve performance excellence, and strengthen accountability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide quality Transportation Services by:
- Planning and defining operational objectives, quality requirements, schedules, and cost parameters.
- Organizing personnel and resources, including contracted support, for effective service delivery.
- Continuously evaluating service activities, ensuring quality assurance, and measuring performance towards desired outcomes.
- Reporting results and identifying opportunities to enhance quality, efficiency, and effectiveness.
- Developing business plans, feasibility studies, and reports to demonstrate value for money and efficiency.
- Manage transit and fleet activities to ensure a high-quality and safe public transportation system through effective communication, collaboration, and innovative problem-solving, while ensuring compliance with legislation, policies, and procedures. This includes:
- Developing and executing annual work plans for the service area.
- Assisting in budget development and management.
- Developing and implementing operational procedures.
- Participating in annual reviews of operation and maintenance procedures and recommending improvements.
- Recommending service area improvements.
- Strategizing for transit growth and issues.
- Liaising with operational areas for fleet replacements.
- Monitoring fleet reserves and adjusting amortization and replacement costs as needed.
- Overseeing fleet acquisition and disposal.
- Contribute to making Saint John a ‘Community of Choice’ by ensuring cost-effective service delivery that respects citizens' needs and supports City growth goals outlined in Plan SJ.
- Promote innovation, creativity, and productivity by advancing technology and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Ensure effective operations by:
- Guiding operational activities related to Transportation Services.
- Setting clear management direction aligned with service objectives.
- Contributing to budget processes with realistic cost-benefit analyses.

- Lead emergency preparedness planning and response to protect the public and environment, providing operational leadership during emergencies and service disruptions, often under challenging conditions and long hours.
