Join the Canadian Armed Forces as an Operating Room Technician, where you'll play a crucial role in providing perioperative care and ensuring the safety of surgical environments. As a member of the military, Operating Room Technicians are responsible for providing an aseptic environment that enables the safe performance of operative procedures in both static (at home) and operational (deployed) environments.
Operating Room Technicians are integral members of the surgical team, providing perioperative and post-operative care, assisting surgeons and anesthesiologists, and performing orthopaedic casting procedures in support of surgery. They are also responsible for Medical Device Reprocessing, processing surgical materials and instruments.
The primary duties of an Operating Room Technician include:
Operating Room Technicians typically work in civilian hospitals within military OR teams or integrated civilian teams in Canada, and on international deployments. Work schedules are usually Monday to Friday but may include shifts or on-call duties depending on operational needs.
If you join the Regular Force, after completing training, you will be assigned to a base, with potential relocations. In the Primary Reserve Force, you serve part-time with a Reserve unit, working approximately one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment.
Applicants must hold a Practical Nursing diploma, be licensed as an LPN/RPN by a provincial or territorial regulatory authority, and have a letter of good standing. Certification as an Operating Room Technician (LPN/RPN with peri-operative specialty) is an asset.
