Job summary

University of Toronto is seeking a Third Class Operating Engineer to operate and maintain mechanical systems in assigned buildings. Duties include rounds, troubleshooting, and coordinating with contractors to ensure continuous service.

Requirements include a valid Ontario Third Class Certificate, at least 1 year of experience, and basic IT skills. Shift flexibility covering day, afternoon, and night, including weekends, is expected.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent plus Third Class Operating Engineer Certification valid in Ontario.
• At least 1 year of operating engineer experience with mechanical equipment operation and maintenance.
• Basic electrical knowledge and troubleshooting skills; familiarity with Word, Excel and BAS.

Responsibilities

• Regular rounds to check mechanical equipment and perform needed service.
• Ensure continuous efficiency of mechanical equipment and services.
• Provide running maintenance for compressors and controls in various areas.
• Respond to trouble calls or alarms from buildings and nearby sites.
• Review computer printouts and alarms and take action.
• Coordinate with outside contractors and University trades when on shift.
• Housekeeping duties such as cleaning and painting.
• Respond to off-duty calls to fix emergencies.
• Maintain daily log sheets and communicate with relief shift engineer.

Description

Under the direction of the Manager, Mechanical Operations and Maintenance and/or leadership of the Lead Hand Engineer, the incumbent is responsible for the operation and maintenance in the building(s) assigned where a Third (3rd) Class Operating Engineer Certificate is required either by law or due to the complexity of the operation and/or critical services provided for building environment and Faculty. The engineer is responsible for the safe and economical operation and maintenance of all mechanical and associated equipment and services in their area of responsibility.

Typical Duties

The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job; they in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated:

• regular rounds to check mechanical equipment and perform needed mechanical service;
• ensures continuous efficiency of all mechanical equipment services and faculty equipment;
• provides running maintenance by checking lube levels of compressors and adjustments to all equipment and controls serving areas such as computer rooms, laboratories, classrooms, offices, special faculty cold rooms/ warm rooms, etc.;
• answers and reacts promptly to all trouble calls or alarms from buildings, as well as from adjacent nearby buildings;
• reviews computer printouts and alarms and takes appropriate action;
• co-ordinates and/or assists outside contractors and University of Toronto Trades Services when work is performed during shift;
• housekeeping: painting, sweeping floors, cleaning piping, boilers and equipment;
• responds to off duty calls to correct emergency situations and problems; and
• maintains daily log sheets on operating equipment and records all important events that occur during shift and communicates with relief shift engineer on event issues.

Education

High School graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience plus a Third (3rd) Class Operating Engineer Certification valid in the Province of Ontario.

Experience

Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an operating engineer. Must have a good working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment, including refrigeration, heating (e.g. boilers) and air handling systems, and ability to comprehend and apply environmental control principles. Must have: basic electrical knowledge and trouble-shooting skills, basic proficiency in standard office computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows OS) and familiarity with computerized Building Automation Systems or other computerized control systems.

Other

Must have: good diagnostic and record keeping skills, the ability to communicate effectively (both orally and written), strong customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others. Building Environmental Systems Certificate an asset.

Shift Details

Regular 8 hour shifts, 40 hours per week. Must be available day, afternoon and night shifts, including weekends and holidays
