Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator

Company Overview

IATSE Local 891 is a labour organization representing over 10,000 professional artists and technicians working in nineteen (19) different departments in the British Columbia and Yukon film industry. The skills, professionalism and world class reputation of IATSE 891’s members attract film and television producers from across the globe.

Summary

Reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Administration and Finance, and up to the President; the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Coordinator provides a wide range of OHS coordination and support to the organization. The OHS Coordinator is responsible for assisting members with their WorkSafeBC claims and / or appeals process as well as coordinating and supporting the organization in advancement of health and safety initiatives.

The following job duties and responsibilities are illustrative examples of the position and shall not be construed as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the job.

Responsibilities

  • Responding to member inquiries related to worker injuries.
  • Providing guidance and assistance with claims management and appeal processes with WorkSafeBC.
  • Attending industry related safety meetings as required and directed.
  • Coordinating appeal and short-term disability (STD) repayments.
  • Supporting and coordinating vocational rehabilitation plans as appropriate with WorkSafeBC.
  • Reviewing Form 7’s and EIIR’s for required follow-up while liaising with the Union Representatives as needed.
  • Complying to requests for response in adjudication of injuries related to claims.
  • Promoting safety knowledge, cultivating a safety culture by communicating with all levels of the organization.
  • Assisting as required with ongoing safety-related projects, such as safety app development.
  • Staying current on literature regarding health and safety issues while making recommendations for improvement to the organization.
  • May conduct a wide range of administrative and clerical tasks including but not limited to managing spreadsheets, logging, scanning, filing, and organization of information.
  • May be assigned on an ad hoc basis to perform relief for other staff positions.
  • Other duties as required and assigned

Note : Occasional daily travel within the Metro Vancouver area and Fraser Valley may be required.

Requirements

  • Minimum of Grade 12 with relevant post-secondary completion.
  • Minimum two years directly relevant work experience.
  • A safety related professional designation (CRSP) is an asset.
  • Experience with WorkSafeBC policy and guidelines, Human Rights legislation, and applicable legislation and policy.
  • Ability to organize workflow, identify urgent work, multi-task, set priorities, problem solve, and complete tasks efficiently and expeditiously.
  • Must be computer literate with good expertise.
  • Must have excellent customer service, telephone manner, and problem-solving ability with an emphasis on confidentiality.
  • Outstanding interpersonal abilities, a positive attitude, demonstrated outstanding and exceptional judgement.
  • Working knowledge of various virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Ring Central, etc.
  • Able to work quickly and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
  • Superior organizational and time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines are all crucial.
  • Capable of managing data and information with confidentiality and sensitivity.
  • Proficient and detailed understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Pro.
  • Demonstrated practical communication skills, including exceptional verbal, written, and proofreading skills.
  • Must be able to learn and follow new directions quickly and without repetition, and demonstrate initiative, diplomacy, confidentiality and good judgment.
  • Ability to follow privacy standards to maintain confidentiality.
  • Understands the principles of good customer and member service.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and diplomacy skills are essential.
  • Works well in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Knowledge or experience with Union Committee structures or an organization with substantially similar structures.

This is a Unifor bargaining unit position.

Testing may be administered to corroborate skills and qualifications.
