Role and Facility Information

Program Medical Director, Gynecologic Oncology
BC Cancer
Regular Part-time (0.3 FTE)
Location: within British Columbia

Role summary:

The Program Medical Director (“PMD”) Gynecologic Oncology is responsible for the overall provincial leadership of the Gynecologic Oncology Program. This position involves establishing standards, goals, strategies, policies, and processes for the clinical program, and supporting their implementation in collaboration with Department Heads, Executive Medical Directors (EMDs), Medical Directors (MDs), and other practice leaders. The PMD ensures patient-centered care that is equitable, timely, and high quality, maintaining consistency across regions and adapting to regional environments.

The PMD oversees BC Cancer Gynecologic Oncology, providing leadership for current and future programs, and supports research and education initiatives.

  • Reports to: Senior Executive Director Provincial Radiation Therapy and Medical Programs
  • FTE: 0.3
Key accountabilities:
Leadership, Planning, and Administration
  • Provides provincial leadership for the Gynecologic Oncology program.
  • Stays updated on new technologies and advancements; advocates beneficial surgical practices.
  • Develops long-term strategic plans aligned with BC Cancer’s goals.
  • Represents the program on committees and develops structures for provincial, regional, and community engagement.
  • Collaborates with regional health authorities to address surgical care needs.
Quality and Performance
  • Leads development of provincial quality improvement programs.
  • Establishes performance evaluation frameworks and monitors program outcomes.
  • Ensures high-quality, patient-centered interdisciplinary care.
  • Recommends quality metrics and advises surgical leaders on Cancer Control.
  • Addresses quality issues and ensures accreditation standards are met.
Policies and Standards
  • Develops provincial standards of practice and operational policies.
  • Monitors compliance and supports implementation across regions.
Professional Practice Leadership
  • Develops clinical practice standards and investigates concerns.
  • Provides leadership in Cancer Control for surgeons.
  • Builds relationships with external agencies and supports provider training.
Academic and Workforce Planning
  • Supports research and education collaborations with UBC and BC Cancer.
  • Develops educational environments for training and knowledge dissemination.
  • Participates in workforce planning and leadership development.
Program-specific responsibilities:
  • Identifies clinical leaders and manages departmental operations, including financial oversight and staff performance.
Qualifications:
  • Medical degree with fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology.
  • Eligibility for licensing by CPSBC and appointment at BC Cancer.
  • Leadership skills, credibility, motivation, collaboration, and consensus-building.
  • Preference for candidates with leadership roles in UBC Gynecologic Oncology.
