Role and Facility Information

Program Medical Director, Gynecologic Oncology

BC Cancer

Regular Part-time (0.3 FTE)

Location: within British Columbia

Role Summary

The Program Medical Director (“PMD”) Gynecologic Oncology is responsible for overall provincial leadership of the Gynecologic Oncology Program. The position is responsible for the establishment of the gynecological standards, goals, strategies, policies and processes associated with the clinical program, and for helping to support the implementation of these standards working in collaboration with Department Heads, Executive Medical Directors (EMDs), Medical Directors (MDs) and other professional practice leaders as appropriate. The PMD is responsible for ensuring that the clinical program and its core processes achieve patient-centred care which is equitable, timely and of high quality. The PMD ensures consistency in all aspects of the clinical program process across the various regions of the province and supports modification in accordance with the environment of each region.

The position encompasses programmatic responsibility for BC Cancer Gynecologic Oncology and provides professional practice leadership for this current program and future programs established during the appointment. The PMD also supports clinical and scientific staff to foster and stimulate participation in research and education.

Key Accountabilities

Leadership, Planning and Administration

Provides overall leadership within the Agency for the Gynecologic Oncology program.

Maintains up-to-date awareness and understanding of new technologies and advancements in Gynecologic Oncology Care relating to Cancer Control. Advocates changes in surgical practices that have the potential to benefit patient care and service delivery.

In alignment with the BC Cancer executive team and the Agency’s leadership teams, develops long-term strategic plans regarding Gynecologic Oncology Program.

Ensures that the Gynecologic Oncology Program is represented and/or provides input on appropriate internal and external committees or projects as required. Leads the development of structures for representation at provincial, regional and community levels.

In partnership with regional Health Authorities, identifies the surgical cancer care delivery needs in the community and sponsors initiatives to address these needs.

Participates in and makes recommendations regarding strategic and planning activities, when and as requested by the Senior Executive Director, [Radiation Therapy or Systemic Therapy and Medical Programs].

Quality and Performance

Leads the development of provincial quality programs for improvements in Gynecologic Oncology, in close collaboration with other medical leaders in BC Cancer and in the community.

Establishes and maintains a framework for the evaluation of the Gynecologic Oncology Program performance including the identification of appropriate outcomes, their measurement and interpretation, in alignment with BC Cancer’s overall performance management approach.

Responsible for the integration of Gynecologic Oncology as part of high quality, patient centred interdisciplinary cancer care, working in collaboration with other BC Cancer clinical program leaders.

Recommends quality Cancer Control metrics for surgical cancer care settings across the province.

Acts as a resource and advisor to surgical leaders across the province regarding Cancer Control.

Recommends resolutions or remediation actions required to address any quality issues.

Supports issue resolution using problem solving approaches for areas that require strategic decision support related to Gynecologic Oncology Program.

Responsible for accreditation standards performance of the areas relating to Gynecologic Oncology Program.

Policies and Standards

Develops provincial standards of practice for the clinical program area to ensure accordance with accreditation bodies and current standards of practice, in collaboration with the Department Heads. Supports the Department Heads with the implementation of practices in each region.

Develops policies and standards for technical and operational requirements for the clinical program area, in cooperation with Department Heads, EMD/MDs, and EDs.

Monitors compliance and alignment with practice standards within the clinical program.

Provincial Professional Practice Leadership for Gynecologic Oncology

Develops standards of clinical practice and behaviour for Gynecologic Oncology Program.

In consultation with the Senior Executive Director, Medical Affairs and Quality, investigates concerns where necessary of physician behaviour and implements remediation plans.

Provides overall provincial leadership in Cancer Control for the professional practice of surgeons.

Develops and fosters effective relationships with external agencies and professional and licensing associations that positively influence professional practice.

Identifies training, learning and other developments opportunities for Gynecologic Oncology providers.

Academic

Collaborates with the appropriate BC Cancer/UBC medical faculty to support research and education within and beyond the Gynecologic Oncology Program.

Develops an appropriate educational environment for undergraduate and postgraduate and fellowship training to ensure a high quality educational experience for surgical and interdisciplinary trainees within the Program of Gynecologic Oncology.

Oversees the maintenance and expansion of existing SON educational and knowledge dissemination services.

Participates in the needs assessment, development, delivery, and evaluation of additional education services to support surgeons in the community.

Workforce Planning (in conjunction with Medical Affairs)

Participates in the development of long-term workforce and human resource plans for the Gynecologic Oncology program across the province, working in collaboration with the Senior Executive Director, Medical Affairs and Quality and Clinical Information Systems, Department Heads, Executive Medical Directors (EMDs), and Executive Directors.

Assists in the identification, recruitment and selection of Department Heads for the Gynecologic Oncology Program, in collaboration with the relevant EMD.

Responsible for leadership development and succession planning within the Gynecologic Oncology program.

Program-specific

Identifies clinical leaders in communities, establishes liaisons and responds to their oncology issues

Responsible for the operation of Gynecologic Oncology department, including financial oversight, and responsible for staff performance and deliverables.

The Agency will provide the Corporation with the support, technology, material and supplies as reasonably required to provide the Services during the Term.

Qualifications

Graduation from an approved medical school with a specialist fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology.

Eligibility for or licensing by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.

Eligibility for or appointment to the staff of BC Cancer.

Demonstrated leadership attributes including credibility, motivation, collaboration and consensus building skills.

Preference will be give to candidates who hold a leadership position within the department of Gynecologic Oncology with UBC
