Job summary

Saint Mary's University in Halifax seeks a Science Technician II to support the Astronomy & Physics department. You will operate, maintain, and repair the Observatory's telescopes and equipment, and provide instruction to students and faculty in its use.

You will co-ordinate Astronomy class use, supervise the Observatory Assistant, and plan upgrades while managing the department's computer systems and lab supplies. Excellent communication is essential.

Qualifications

• University degree required.
• Observational astronomy, telescope and observatory skills required.
• Linux-based computer administration skills essential.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain and repair the Observatory's telescopes and research equipment.
• Provide instruction to students and Faculty in the Observatory and equipment usage.
• Coordinate Observatory use for Astronomy classes and oversee the Observatory Assistant.
• Plan upgrades to Observatory and equipment and manage lab supplies.
• Administer departmental computer systems including Sun Linux servers and Windows PCs.
• Provide problem-solving support to faculty and students on departmental systems.
• Schedule public tours and deliver astronomy lectures to various groups.
