Job description

As a Nursery Worker, you will play a vital role in the daily operations of the Old Man Creek Nursery, ensuring the health and vitality of our diverse plant collection.


Reporting to the Nursery Crew Leader, this Permanent Nursery Worker position is responsible for maintaining and inventorying containerized plants held at the Nursery, assisting the Nursery Gardener in propagation work, and making deliveries of plant material to naturalization programs. In this role, you will provide expertise in horticultural practices, mentor unskilled laborers, and ensure the quality of work completed. You will also be involved in irrigation maintenance, and general nursery upkeep. Winter work will include propagation, pruning of field trees, and clearing of snow and ice from the Nursery site.

What will you do?

  • Provide field-level mentorship and oversight to unskilled laborers, demonstrating best practices in plant maintenance, equipment use, and quality assurance
  • Manage inventory and assess plant health, ensuring accurate records and timely escalation of concerns
  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled labor to support the growth and care of plant material, including pruning, transplanting, irrigation, and equipment operation
  • Conduct general nursery tasks, such as infrastructure maintenance, routine inspections, and bird-deterrent procedures
Qualifications

  • Certificate-Level (1-year) Post-Secondary Horticulture with Courses in Production, Weeds, & Plant Identification; and/or
  • Certified Landscape Horticulture Technician, Red Seal Landscape Horticulturist, or ISA Certified Arborist
  • Skid Steer/Track Loader Training, Tractor Training, Trailer Training, and/or ability to obtain within 90 days
  • 3 years of experience in Landscaping, Plant Nurseries, and/or Horticulture production and maintenance

Assets:

  • Certified Pesticide Applicator or Authorized Assistant
  • Certified Irrigation Technician
  • Prior experience operating Tractors, Pulling Trailers, Trucks up to 3-ton capacity, Skid Steers, and/or Track loaders

Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of landscaping and nursery stock standards
  • Knowledge of plant health requirements, including soil, watering, and Integrated Pest Management
  • Knowledge of nursery container sizes, names, and terminology for various plant stocks
  • Ability to differentiate varieties of common landscape plants, trees, and native plants, and understanding of scientific nomenclature for identifying plants
  • Ability to schedule and maintain irrigation systems
  • Knowledge of structural pruning for young trees
  • Ability to work proficiently with Google Apps: Gmail, Sheets, Docs
  • Ability to efficiently maintain digital inventory records
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to effectively communicate requirements to safely accomplish assigned work and request clarification as needed

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs and work in awkward/constrained physical positions for more than 60% of the time
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with colleagues, supervisors, and the public
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a level CN City Driver's permit (Operating vehicles up to the registered weight of 11,794 kg) is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • The work environment is primarily outdoors, with exposure to extreme temperatures, precipitation, dust, and various occupational hazards. The position requires the use of personal protective equipment, including safety footwear, head protection, skin protection, hand protection, body protection, hearing protection, eye protection, and respiratory protection
