N.P.A., a division of Colas Western Canada Inc., is currently hiring an Apprentice Electrician to join our team. Reporting to the Asphalt Plants Manager, you will assist with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and automation systems across our plants and related equipment.

This entry-level role offers hands-on experience and opportunities for growth. You will work with Journeyman Electricians, gain exposure to PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and control systems, and

Summary

N.P.A., a division of Colas Western Canada Inc., is currently hiring an Apprentice Electrician to join our team!

Reporting to the Asphalt Plants Manager, the Electrical Apprentice will assist with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and continuous improvement of electrical and automation systems used throughout our asphalt plants, concrete batch plants, aggregate crushing operations, and related production equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist Journeyman Electricians with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems on asphalt plants, concrete plants, crushing spreads, and support equipment.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical control circuits, motors, MCCs, VFDs, instrumentation, and production equipment.
  • Assist in diagnosing electrical, instrumentation, and control system faults using appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment.
  • Support the maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, automated equipment, and industrial control systems, including programming, backups, documentation, and modifications under supervision.
  • Assist with setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial communication systems, including Ethernet networks, wireless communications, remote access systems, and control system integration.
  • Inspect, test, calibrate, and troubleshoot instrumentation and process control devices, including temperature, pressure, level, flow, and weighing systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, blueprints, wiring diagrams, control schematics, P&IDs, and applicable electrical code requirements.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and support reliability initiatives for electrical, instrumentation, automation, and control systems.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and maintenance of asphalt plants, crushing, screening, conveying, concrete batch plant, burner, baghouse, tank farm, RAP, and material handling systems.
  • Support automation projects, system upgrades, retrofits, data collection systems, production monitoring systems, and plant improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in apprenticeship training, technical development opportunities, required documentation, field travel, and other related duties as assigned.
  • Promote, execute, and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors, and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
  • Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the wellbeing of others.
Qualifications | Requirements
Education and Training
  • Class 5 Drivers License required.
  • Registered Electrical Apprentice (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Year) or willingness to register in an apprenticeship program.
Work Experience
  • Experience in industrial, construction, maintenance, electrical, or heavy production environments, including road construction, aggregate, asphalt, concrete, or similar industrial operations.
  • Hands‑on experience with industrial electrical and automation systems, including PLCs, instrumentation, process controls, industrial networking, troubleshooting, and technology‑based projects such as robotics, electronics, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or related systems.
Technical Knowledge
  • Basic understanding of electrical theory and electrical safety practices.
  • Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and electrical test equipment.
  • Interest in learning industrial controls, automation systems, instrumentation, and process control technologies.
  • Interest in PLC programming and industrial automation systems.
  • Familiarity with Allen‑Bradley, Rockwell Automation, FactoryTalk, Siemens, or other PLC platforms is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with HMI, SCADA, and plant monitoring systems is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, MQTT, and OPC-UA is considered an asset.
Working Conditions
  • Overtime as required.
  • Work may be performed in an indoor setting, which could include standing for long periods of time, and exposure to dust and fumes.
  • Work may be performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 LBS on a regular basis.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
