The Non-Registered Technologist performs and is responsible for a variety of laboratory tests and procedures under the supervision of a CMLTO registered Medical Laboratory Technologist and/or Medical/Scientific staff. They support 24/7 operations, working all shifts on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays. The role involves working in TDM/Toxicology/Special Chemistry within the Division of Biochemistry.

The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility dedicated to reducing childhood illness impact by providing diagnostic information for early treatment decisions. DPLM offers specialized diagnostic services, conducts original research, and comprises divisions such as Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.

Responsibilities
  1. Follow standard operating procedures strictly.
  2. Rotate through all laboratory areas as assigned.
  3. Prioritize workload to ensure efficiency and timely results.
  4. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  5. Prepare and issue samples/specimens.
  6. Maintain accurate records of testing.
  7. Perform laboratory tests and procedures accurately within specified timeframes.
  8. Recognize failures, troubleshoot, and document actions.
  9. Report failures and issues to supervisors.
  10. Assess results against diagnoses, recognizing abnormal and critical results and taking appropriate actions.
  11. Manage inventory and communicate reagent and supply needs.
  12. Participate in quality system policies and procedures.
  13. Follow health and safety procedures.
  14. Understand and perform quality control practices, including reviewing QC results and addressing issues.
Qualifications
  1. Bachelor of Science and/or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology.
  2. Demonstrated intent to become registered with CMLTO as a Medical Lab Technologist.
  3. Solid computer skills.
  4. Relevant technical skills and troubleshooting ability.
  5. Customer service orientation and good interpersonal skills.
  6. Strong organizational skills, ability to work under pressure, and prioritize tasks.
  7. Critical thinking and high accuracy.
  8. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  9. Self-directed, adaptable to new technologies and processes.
  10. Attention to detail and decision-making ability.
  11. Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  12. Experience with paediatrics and laboratory technology is an asset.
