The Varsity, U of T’s tri-campus student newspaper of record since 1880, is looking to hire aNews Editor for the upcoming year. The editor will manage and publish news content for our weekly issues. This is an exciting opportunity to join the masthead of a major Canadian campus publication!
Varsity Publications Inc. is an incorporated not-for-profit corporation entirely managed and operated by students. It publishes The Varsity, which puts out a print issue each week during the academic year and maintains a strong online presence through its website (thevarsity.ca). All full-time undergraduate and graduate students at U of T’s three campuses are members of the corporation.
Responsibilities
The News Editor will be responsible for managing The Varsity’s News Section. They will:
● Write News articles a week;
● Edit News articles every week;
● Pitch ideas for stories that can be picked up by other members of the News team;
● Attend Sunday production, and assist with administrative tasks for the News section, like developing pitches.
● Manage and lead the News team for the year
● Manage breaking news stories with the team throughout the year
Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate is:
● A post-secondary student at U of T upon applying for the position
● Able to be a team player in a fast-paced environment
● A strong communicator and detail oriented
● Hardworking, self-motivated, organized, and punctual
● Understanding of current issues and ability to recognize what makes a good story
Terms of the position
● Hours: 20 hours a week
● Term: May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025
