Qualifications

  • Recent clinical experience in an active care setting required.
  • IV Therapy certificate required.
  • Geriatric Nursing and Dementia Care experience preferred.
  • CADD pump and central line management knowledge required.
  • Mental Health Act knowledge required.
  • PHIPA knowledge required.
  • RAI knowledge an asset.
  • GPA certificate an asset.

Job description

Department: Seniors Mental Health & Dementia Care (A1/B1)

The Seniors’ Mental Health Program provides a continuum of specialized mental health services and education for seniors and their formal and informal caregivers across northeast Ontario. The program provides assessment, intervention and support to assist individuals with age related mental health disorders to remain in the community (private home, long-term care home or retirement home) and to prevent psychiatric hospitalization where possible. While most individuals receiving services from the program are over 65 years of age, services are also provided to those under 65 if they have an age related mental health issue.

QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)
  • Recent medical / clinical experience (within the last 2-3 years) in an active care setting required
  • Current certificate in IVTherapy required
  • Relevant nursing skills such as wound care and sponge vac management an asset
  • Continuous Ambulatory Drug Device (CADD) pump and central line management required
  • Recent Geriatric Nursing experience required
  • Recent Dementia Care required
  • Recent Palliative Care an asset
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act required
  • Knowledge of Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
  • Knowledge of Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) an asset
  • Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate
  • PIECES (Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Environment, Social Self) approach required
  • Mental Health experience required
Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent level of interpersonal skills required
  • Excellent level of written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to effectively provide health teaching to individuals and groups required
  • Excellent level of physical assessment skills required
  • Ability to work as a collaborative member of the health team required
  • Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate required
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision required
  • Ability to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to medical patients required
  • Basic computer knowledge is an asset
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
  • Good attendance and work record required
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
