North Bay Regional Health Centre seeks a Registered Nurse to join Regional Dementia Care, Oak Lodge-Sudbury. You will work with an interdisciplinary team to assess and treat older adults with dementia, managing complex behavioural and medical needs in a collaborative setting.

The role emphasizes trauma‑informed care, patient safety, and ongoing education. Shifts may vary across programs to meet regional needs, with emphasis on effective communication and leadership.

Qualifications

  • Current nursing registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • BLS for Health Care Providers required (within the last 12 months).
  • Experience with older adults with responsive behaviours.
  • Knowledge of neurodegenerative disorders and related pharmacotherapy.
  • Familiarity with PHIPA, Mental Health Act, RHPA and related acts.

Job description

Department: Regional Dementia Care (Oak Lodge- Sudbury)

The Regional Dementia Care Program provides comprehensive specialized assessment and treatment of older adults (usually >65 years old) and/or adults with an age-related dementia, which is complicated by behavioural and psychological symptoms, and/or medical comorbidities that exceed the capacity of the community, general hospital, complex continuing care and long-term care system.

QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge
  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) certificate required (within the last twelve months)
  • Experience working with older adults demonstrating responsive behaviours including evidence of creative application of Personhood required
  • Knowledge of neurodegenerative disorders, best practices, and relevant pharmacotherapy for this population required
  • Knowledge of relevant acts and regulations e.g. Regulated Health Professionals Act, Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) required
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care principles and able to apply within all relationships and interactions
  • Flexibility to work within an interdisciplinary environment required
  • Educational assets: Gentle Persuasive approach (GPA), Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Capabilities, Environment and Social Self (PIECES), Montessori Methods for Dementia
  • Excellent verbal de-escalation skills required
  • Must be willing to work shifts in other programs as required

  • Must demonstrate excellent level of interpersonal skills
  • Must demonstrate excellent level of written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services and community partners required
  • Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups required
  • Must be committed to continuing education on an annual basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement required
  • Ability to effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team required
  • Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate required
  • Able to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients required
  • Ability to problem-solve and function in a fast-paced environment required
  • Excellent demonstrated assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills required
  • Must demonstrate basic computer knowledge
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required
  • Must demonstrate good attendance and work record
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is an asset. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
