Job description

The Synthetic Environment (SE) Technical Architect will provide support through the use of their knowledge-based and skills-based experience in network topologies for on‑premise and cloud‑based computing. They will also provide site IT Administration for the SE in support of Naval Material for the Royal Canadian Navy, focused on network infrastructure (primarily Cisco Layer 2/Layer 3) with a Windows Active Directory environment. The Technical Architect will provide knowledge and experience with hypervisors including Microsoft Hyper‑V and VMware vSphere. The SE team supports other teams that provide multi‑disciplinary engineering and technical services related to the River Class Destroyer (RCD) Naval Combat System. Weir Marine Engineering supports the RCD Project Management Office (PMO) within the Department of National Defence (DND) Office at the Brisbane building in Dartmouth, NS. This work could also be conducted at the Land‑Based Test Facility (LBTF) to be located in Hartlen Point, NS. The candidate may also support other project areas as required, including Integrated Test Evaluation and Acceptance (ITEA), Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), Performance Modelling and Simulation (M&S), and Land‑Based Test Capability activities. This is a full‑time, permanent position with a requirement for regular work both in‑office and onboard RCN ships.

Key Responsibilities
  • IT Administration: Manage technical resources for hardware and software activities to support Naval Combat Systems on the RCD project.
  • Verification & Validation (V&V): Execute V&V activities for systems, software, and hardware; evaluate test plans, procedures, scenarios, and results; ensure traceability and meet verification criteria; monitor test activities; and identify, document, and mitigate risks and anomalies.
  • Technical Documentation: Review technical documentation such as system requirements specifications, interface control documents, system design descriptions, hazard analysis reports, and equipment installation plans.
  • Analysis and Reporting: Analyze test results, conduct evaluation and assurance activities, and generate IV&V plans, procedures, and reports. Document V&V activity defects or anomalies, identify risk and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Support to Client: Maintain positive, friendly, collaborative relationships with team members, internal and external stakeholders. Liaison with subject matter experts, DND customers and suppliers.
  • Safety: Demonstrate 100% commitment to zero‑harm behaviors and support the development of a world‑class safety culture.
Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications
  • Security: Must obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, which necessitates Canadian citizenship and a minimum of 10 years of continuous residence in Canada.
  • Education: Engineering technologist diploma or bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science, or equivalent military experience supporting the Royal Canadian Navy in combat system engineering.
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of significant and recent experience in a related field, including familiarity with system, software and hardware verification & validation techniques and processes.
  • Soft skills: Skilled in reading, writing, and speaking English, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels (both in‑person and electronically) with peers, supervisors, and clients. Capable of drafting reports, technical correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Desirable: Proficiency in software configuration control, systems engineering lifecycle, requirements management tools, and knowledge in simulation, stimulation, and analysis tools.
