Job description

Permanent Full-time, Onsite work

Weir Canada, Inc. Halifax NS Canada

Purpose of Role

Weir Marine Engineering is currently looking for a Naval Systems Specialist with current or former experience in underwater warfare and underwater combat systems to join our Combat and Control Systems (CCS) team at the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Centre (CFMWC). This permanent position, based in Halifax NS, is an analyst position that provides a range of services in support of Operational Test & Evaluation (OT&E) and Tactical Development. The analyst is part of a team initiating and undertaking at‑sea tests, conducting technical investigations and validating system performance and tactics effectiveness. The position may also include collaboration and liaison with ongoing naval projects and equipment managers. Sound analytical skills, organisational knowledge, and previous work experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Royal Canadian Air Force is important as the work often requires a collaborative approach with numerous RCN stakeholders. This position includes a combination of office (mostly) and shipboard (sometimes) environments with occasional requirements to perform work outside or onboard ships and occasional short‑duration travel to other test locations. This position provides a great opportunity to become immersed in cutting‑edge technology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct analysis including specification of test objectives, metrics, required resources, and test procedures.
  • Provide underwater warfare subject matter expertise with respect to RCN underwater warfare weapons, sensors, countermeasures, and combat management interfaces, including working knowledge of weapons, sensors and tactics. Provide technical and operational advice to CFMWC (the client) and other Anti‑Submarine Warfare stakeholders as required.
  • Coordinate efforts directed at data collection, event reconstruction, analysis, reporting, and data management.
  • Collaborate in a demanding work environment ashore and at sea. The applicant must multitask, work collaboratively in small teams, and be able to both lead and contribute to client‑adopted initiatives.
  • Demonstrate 100% commitment to zero‑harm behaviours supporting a world‑class safety culture.
Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications
  • Eligible to obtain Government‑of‑Canada security clearance of Level II.
  • Excellent organisational skills with attention to detail and quality. Proficiency in written English is essential, including technical and operational content for a wide audience. Must communicate effectively at all levels with peers, supervisors and clients.
  • Current or former RCN/RCAF/NATO ORO‑TACCO‑PWO experience (Underwater Warfare Specialisation). Preference may also be given to RCN NTOs or other civilian applicants with degrees in Operations Research, Acoustics, or Oceanography. Consideration for those willing to learn and who have an aptitude and desire to work in a technical analysis field.
  • Familiarity with Naval Operational Test & Evaluation procedures and operational knowledge of military shipboard systems.
